  • ______________ DANCE ARTIST MAVIN KHOO COMES TOGETHER WITH GIDEON BERGER, JOY ALPUERTO RITTER AND AKRAM KHAN TO PRESENT MAN[OR]GOD: A DANCE CONFESSION OF QUEER DESIRE AND DIVINE LOVE. _______________ I’ve asked, called, urged, seduced God to make love to me And in the dances of my imagination I am Man I am Woman I am Neither I am Both I am Queer _______________ Internationally acclaimed dance artist Mavin Khoo tells his own story as a queer South Asian man living in London. MAN[or]GOD is a coming together of dance, film and music to create an immersive journey that takes the audience into the unexplored territory between the devotion for dance, desire and the divine. This new work is a collaboration between Khoo and some of Europe’s most exciting creatives. He has invited artist and music producer Gideon Berger, the co-founder and director of renowned collective Block9, to be the creative and music director to the full-length duet choreographed by Berlin-based Joy Alpuerto Ritter. The work also invites a restaged excerpt by celebrated dance artist Akram Khan. Khoo shares the stage with contemporary ballet dancer Hector Ferrer, former dancer of Ballet du Rhin and Royal Ballet of Flanders. As an integral part of the dance and sound experience, a film created by French director Maxime Dos will be projected as another vibrant and significant dimension to the story. Ric Mountjoy completes the team of creatives as the lighting designer. Staged within the darkness of a warehouse, this performative and experiential journey is a personal love note revealing the tensions that unfold through a relationship challenged by opposing ideas on Love and God. It evolves into a complex portrait and a diary of life that speaks openly and freely: at its heart, a diasporic South Asian queer experience in constant navigation with its Western surrounding. Berger’s score features very honest words written by Khoo himself and director Jack McMahon during lockdown in 2020. Exposing the rarely explored space between spirituality and the queer experience, it encapsulates the many identities of a mature man and artist in London nightlife underworld. It is a validation of Self through the ‘touch’ of others – both Man and God. This work will also be Khoo’s last contemporary dance work that he will perform before he returns solely to solo Indian classical concert recitals. It is a homage to the many contemporary artists (dancers and makers) that he has had the privilege to work with. _______________ Estimated time: 75 mins This is a standing event for the audience - please let us know if you have accessibility requirements as we have a reserved area for seated viewers. *** There will be Strobe lighting during this performance ***
