  • Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy interviews Honey Dijon. Producer Pioneers is a brand-new event series presented by Classic Album Sundays and Resident Advisor which will celebrate, educate and aim to inspire the next generation of women producers within the music production space. The free, four-part series will take place this October in Hackney’s Colour Factory and feature names including Honey Dijon and Emma Jean Thackray. Producer Pioneers is here to drive change. Although there are steps towards a more balanced industry, today only a staggering 6% of producers identify as women, proving that there is still a huge bridge to gap until we are closer to a more equal and democratic situation. All sorts of barriers are faced by many women artists including tokenism within bookings, lack of access to resources, lack of confidence when dealing with a majority male landscape. Producer Pioneers aims to be a part of this solution, providing a platform and set of educational tools to support change and motivate the next generation of women producers. Masterminded by DJ and producer, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, the series will unite some of the world’s most acclaimed women producers including Honey Dijon, Flava D, Emma-Jean Thackray and Lucinda Chua. Each live conversation will dive deep into their production methods, as well as explore what has inspired them in a series of intimate interviews. Producer Pioneers is supported by Danley Sound Labs and Audio Technica – brands which fully understand the mission to create a more balanced and democratic future in the world of audio. In a physical form, the Producer Pioneer events will follow the format of event listening series - Classic Album Sundays and run throughout October and November. The first in the series is 18th of October 2022 with Colleen interviewing producer Honey Dijon. Each following edition will see a different presenter inviting one of the inspirational women producers to explore the creation of seven, specifically chosen tracks, the details of the production process itself and impart essential wisdom to the audience. From the intricacies and details of their specific work to tips and advice for equipment - this will be a sharing session for women producers, new and existing, in a space full of encouragement and inspiration. In a physical form, the Producer Pioneer events will follow the format of album platform and listening session series Classic Album Sundays and will run throughout October and November. "As a DJ for over 3 decades, I’m pleased to have witnessed some major shifts in the representation of women in this vocation in the past couple of years. The profile-raising of women DJs and the affirmative action taken by many promoters has been a huge positive change and I’m delighted that the playing field is in the process of becoming more even. The motivation for Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy to start the series was to provide a solution to an evident problem and build a community whilst doing this - and this first run of Producer Pioneer shows are the first steps. In collaboration with the world’s largest electronic music platform, Resident Advisor, Classic Album Sundays’ Producer Pioneers will also record the events to live on their platform so that these tools can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, at any time. Resident Advisor will be working with Producer Pioneers to create a series of educational tools that will help women producers to put into practice these vital lessons. Each event will be 100% free to attend via sign up, and a special chance to learn up close these valuable insights from some of the best in the game. Building on the celebrated listening format, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy was drawn to pay homage to the incredible women production talent that exists, and to provide resource to a new wave that will help to bridge that gap. Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy is protégé of music cultural icon David Mancuso and New York’s revolutionary Loft Parties, and her colourful story has placed her as an authority in the electronic music world. Colleen has watched the evolution of electronic music from the centre - seeing disco and house scenes fostering LGBTQ+ and multicultural safe spaces in her epic career. I feel now is the time to also highlight the women who make up the small 6% of the UK’s music producers. As I began producing 25 years ago, this pursuit is not only professional, but personal. Our Producer Pioneer series will celebrate the women who despite many challenges have made major inroads in this currently male-dominated arena. Our aim is to celebrate these women producers and to share their stories and advice to inspire other women to realise their own hidden talents. Together we can begin to level out this playing field, too.” Amy Van-Baaren, Head of Community at Resident Advisor said: "We are delighted to work alongside Classic Album Sunday for this series celebrating and sharing knowledge from experienced and extremely talented producers in the hope to inspire the next generation. The Jaguar Foundation report highlighted the massive gender disparity in UK dance music and we hope initiatives like these will help to close the gap.” This event series is supported by Danley and Audio Technica, who have both been pivotal in enabling the Producer Pioneer series.
