  • Our 21st birthday events begin with an evening editorial programme at Soup. Entry is free, so come down and hear conversations with Mala, 808 State, DJ Paulette and more.
  • To begin our 21st birthday celebrations, we'll touch down for a curated editorial programme at one of our favourite UK venues: Manchester's Soup. Join us for an evening of talks, panel discussions, music and live RA features. This event is free to access and no advance ticket is required, however we'd advise getting down early, as capacity is limited. Programme: The Art of Production live: 808 State The Art of Production is one of RA's flagship feature series, where a producer chats through their techniques, style, gear and the nuances that make their productions unique. This special live edition will see dance music historian Matt Anniss sit down with Manchester acid house royalty 808 State's Graham Massey for a deep dive into their approach to production. In this interactive session, Massey will unpack how they made their iconic track "Cobra Bora." In Conversation: Tracing Manchester Nightlife with Alice Woods (Meat Free), Antoin KMA (Kiss Me Again), DJ Paulette, Soyboi Manchester is famous worldwide for the halcyon days of the Haçienda and there's no doubt it paved the way for the electronic music scene we have today. But how much has the past influenced the future? And who really writes our story? For some, Madchester is the foundation for everything that's come since, while for others it's a ball and chain. Looking forward, who are the trailblazers pushing not only a Manchester sound, but a spirit too? For this conversation we've invited voices from across Manchester's nightlife communities to speak, chosen for their personal journeys, what they've contributed to the scene and their myriad of experiences. We're looking forward to a lively collaborative conversation that will consider the past, present and future of dance music in Manchester. RA Exchange live: Mala The RA Exchange is a monthly series in which we invite artists, labels, promoters and other players shaping the electronic music landscape to engage in an open conversation about their career so far, the shapeshifting nature of dance music and anything else that the discussion happens upon. Our guest for this live edition of the Exchange needs no introduction: Mala. One half of revered dubstep duo Digital Mystikz, Mala is a DJ and producer from London. A pioneer of bassweight sounds and head of two legendary record labels, Deep Medi Musik and DMZ, Mala has been instrumental in the trajectory of the UK-originated dubstep sound. The Exchange will be hosted by London-based journalist Kieran Yates. RA Journalism Workshop The purpose of journalism in a music scene is to spotlight the vibrant narratives, characters, and phenomena that bring this community to life. These days, it’s relatively easy to get involved: the skills can be self-taught, editors and artists easily reached. But being a journalist requires expertise in at least two subjects: music and the craft of writing, along with a strong tenacity to follow a story. In this workshop, RA’s news editor, Carlos Hawthorn, and events writer, Katie Thomas, will instruct you on how to land a pitch, what it takes to write a compelling feature, and answer your questions on music journalism as a viable career path.
