  • RA celebrates 21 years with a day of discourse at Nowadays. The likes of Aurora Halal, Byrell The Great and more will be talking about their craft and nightlife today.
  • For the second leg of our 21st birthday celebrations, we'll be at beloved Queens venue Nowadays for a daytime editorial programme. Find the schedule for the day, which is free to attend, below: RA Exchange live: Byrell The Great The RA Exchange is a monthly series in which we invite artists, labels, promoters and other players who are shaping the electronic music landscape to engage in an open conversation about their career so far, the shapeshifting nature of dance music and anything else that the discussion happens upon. Byrell The Great, one of New York ballroom's most iconic and legendary DJs, joins staff writer Kiana Mickles for this special live version of the Exchange. The Art of DJing live: Aurora Halal The Art of DJing is one of RA's flagship feature series, where a producer chats through their techniques, style, gear and all the tips and tricks that make their DJ sets unique and impactful. In this special live edition, Aurora Halal, producer, DJ and mastermind behind Brooklyn party Mutual Dreaming and Sustain Release, one of the best festivals in the US, will unpack her craft with senior staff writer Nyshka Chandran. In Conversation: DIY culture in NYC with Dubstuy, Soul Summit, Mizz Softee In New York, underground dance music thrives outside of traditional nightlife venues. From public parks to industrial warehouses to private residences, DJs and promoters have long-sought out spaces beyond the realm of clubs, bars and restaurants. There's an element of magic when parties take place in an unexpected setting–there's space for more adventurous programming and a heightened sense of connection on the dance floor. In this conversation, three of New York's respected DIY crews discuss how they plan parties, deal with licensing laws, encourage safer spaces and intentionally interact with their environment, all while trying to grow their respective communities. Playing Favourites: Justin Strauss & Vivian Host In this special live version of Playing Favourites, we'll dive into the record bags of Justin Strauss, one of NYC's most revered selectors and personalities. This will be an interactive listening session, where we'll hear about a selection of Strauss' most formative records, interviewed by fellow NYC legend Vivian Host. RA Journalism Workshop The purpose of journalism in a music scene is to spotlight the vibrant narratives, characters and phenomena that bring this community to life. These days, it's relatively easy to get involved; the skills can be self-taught, editors and artists easily reached. But being a journalist requires expertise in at least two subjects: music and the craft of writing, along with a strong tenacity to follow a story. In this workshop, editor-in-chief Whitney Wei will instruct you on how to land a pitch, what it takes to write a compelling feature and answer your questions on music journalism as a viable career path.
