⬤. Planeta Manas invites Alphabet Street Records as part of our Ciclo Nuvem series dedicated to showcase exciting local collectives at zero cost of entry for members.
Alphabet Street is a record label started in 2021 by Lisbon mainstay Photonz (One Eyed Jacks / mina / Rádio Quântica) and Portuguese house pioneer Yen Sung (Luxfrágil). Their first release, their collab titled “Still”, became an underground hit featured by Resident Advisor and other major dance music publications. Since then they’ve provided a platform for the music of artists such as Kakaf, 2Jack4U, Violet and more.
Their night at Planeta Manas on December 23rd will feature dj sets by local gems such as youngins Kakaf and Meldasperas, underrated veteran DJ Castle and label co-founder Photonz, preceded by a conversation with DJ icon and also label co-founder Yen Sung, covering a wide array of topics and setting the tone for a night of community-focused, soulful music abandon. Entry is free for members.
YEN SUNG
Yen Sung is unquestionably one of the pioneers of the portuguese house scene, a trailblazer of the genre in seminal clubs such as Frágil and Lux. However, unlike others in this pantheon, she’s also widely regarded as a vital figure for the development of hip hop in Portugal, with some of the earliest club nights dedicated to rap music attributed to her and often cited by some of the main figureheads of portuguese rap as an influence. With more than 3 decades behind the decks, Yen has remained unshakeable in the face of trends and fads, building a reputation as one of the most consistent faces of real, unadulterated, deeply-rooted house music.
PHOTONZ
Marco Rodrigues started DJing in the early 00s in small venues in and around Lisbon, playing all kinds of left-of-centre dance music from roots-heavy house and techno to strange electronics and all kinds of rave music. In 2006 he started to release music as Photonz and has, since then, built a considerable catalogue that resonated globally and locally. He’s also been associated with vital developments in the city such as running the label One Eyed Jacks, co-founding Rádio Quântica and the infamous queer rave mina, culminating in the opening of Lisbon’s latest venue Planeta Manas.
DJ CASTLE
Lisbon-based, Angolan-bred António Castelo Branco is one of those well-kept secrets - too well, in our opinion - lurking in the portuguese dance music underground. A pioneer of the house scene in Lisbon, carrying stripes for participating as a DJ in some of the best clubs and raves of the 90s, DJ Castle has maintained a stern commitment to deep underground dance grooves of the highest caliber, consistently serving the best dusty nuggets in house, disco, broken beat and deep techno.
KAKAF
KAKAF is the alias of Cláudio Alexandre, a young, Lisbon-based DJ and producer whose first steps behind the decks happened at the tender age of 12, in the Summer venue Clube Da Praia in Zambujeira do Mar, warming up for well-known local DJs. Born in a musical household, son to a fado singer and a Mozambican musician, Cláudio quickly felt drawn to a mix of different sounds and inspirations that would later inform his creative output. At the age of 16, KAKAF started to make his own productions, strongly influenced by a myriad styles of house and techno and displaying a very natural knack for dramatic, emotional but elegante dancefloor gems. That’s exactly what’s in store for his debut on Alphabet Street: late night dancefloor drama full of black soul and irresistible pull.
MEL DAS PERAS
Melissa Pereira, of Cape Verdean descent, is already known for her work in Lisbon's cultural landscape as an event producer and artist manager. She has recently been venturing herself into DJing as Mel das Pêras. From chilled house party vibes at Manta that get everyone dancing and singing, spontaneous sets at Núcleo70, keeping the heat on at Casa Independente, or kicking off the main floor at Ministerium and Mina - Mel intends to reflect her life experiences by presenting afrobeat, batida, house and R&B/Soul sounds.
