SOMETHING IN THE SKY
A sound and visual DJ performance created and performed by Jeff Mills. He composes and then mixes a Electronic Music soundtrack as backdrop for
the various video and photographic accounts of UFO sightings.

Something In The Sky is a sight and sound experience that references the history of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) Sightings. It explores the extraordinary aspects and perspective of unidentified sightings in the Detroit Metro area, the United and States and around the World. A multi-segmented program consisting of interviews, US documentation and actual film footage of sightings. Something In The Sky is about us, the viewer and our reactions to such occurrences. It displays our subconscious feelings as they emerge and come out into the light by such encounter. No one person is excluded from such experiences and we all share this common interest:

Born out of a need to input interference in our normal everyday lives, this project is designed to make others consider the possibilities of what might consistent and sometimes intriguing eyewitness accounts of the activities of intelligent life could do to our psychological state and belief systems. In the billions of Stars around us, are billions of reasons of why we should look up and outward over our horizon and claim the Universe as our equal territory.
According to a Roper poll conducted in 2002, one in seven Americans say they or someone they know has had an experience involving a UFO. A total of 14 % have had or know someone who has had at least one Close Encounter of the "First," "Second," or "Third" kind. The largest proportion (12%) say they or someone else they know has seen a UFO at close quarters.
Referencing the US Midwest and Michigan regional accounts of UFO sightings that date back to the 1800's, Something In The Sky creates a huge platform for thought, discussion and debate. It raises the stakes and wages, yet another battle, in the War for the truth about what we are. From the Lakes of Saint Clair Shores to downtown Detroit, people have claimed and made efforts to inform us of what they've seen.

07/1878 Michigan. Several members of a dinner party observed a luminous object about 300 yards in length hovering above the skyline. It was described as very beautiful with the color of a red-hot stove. 04-13-1897 Penn field, MI. Mr. and Mrs. George Parks observed a luminous craft emitting a low hum, drop an object into the field. Mr. Parks dug up the fallen object; it had apparently buried itself. The object was an aluminum turbine which Mr. Parks displayed as evidence. 09-12-1906 Flint, MI. On an evening stroll, Mr. G. Fowles and two female companions observed two strangely dressed men on the footpath. Fowles called out to them, only to have them levitate over the treetops out of view. 07-07-1947 Pontiac, MI. Mr. Albert Weaver photographed two small metallic looking discs in the sky overhead. They were of a dark shiny color. 06-17-1949 Battle Creek, MI. Mr. Lloyd Sanders photographed a self-luminous triangular or beehive shaped UFO rising at high speed. No other details are available. 5/10/1989 FARMINGTON HILLS, MI. Midnight Two witnesses Large greenish-silver disc-shaped object, turned on end and paced car for about two hours. Car radio stopped working and electrical system quit working.
5/19/1998 Howell, MI, (55 miles NW of Detroit). The altitude of the light was approximately 85 degrees in the NE sky, almost overhead. Upon being observed, the point of light immediately started to glow brighter until in less than 2 seconds time it had become as bright as, if not brighter than, the sun at noon. Since it was only a point of light, it did not cast any appreciable shadow on the residential landscape. Once I had "acknowledged" the light as having been seen, it started to diminish in brightness and in a time span of five seconds, it had dimmed into invisibility. The light was moving slowly directly south. The entire observation lasted less than 10 seconds. The distance covered in that time was equivalent to the thumb and the index finger held at arm's length and spread apart by 7 inches. The temperature was 73 degrees with a clear sky. No noise was heard and there were no running lights. The sun had set about 8:55 p.m., so I immediately suspected the transpolar satellite, but satellites slip in and out of the Earth's shadow over a much greater expanse of sky. This is the second such observation of almost exactly the same nature and description, and even seen in the same spot in the sky. The first observation was on Labor Day evening in September, 1997.
Something In The Sky was initially designed as sub label of the acclaimed record label, Axis Records. Owned and operated by Jeff Mills, this musical outlet has created some of the most important Electronic Music in history and continues to push the boundaries with such projects as this. Mainly a conceptual music outlet, Axis has expanded its style from Electronic Dance, Cinema and Classical releases.

In the 1980s, Mills was an influential radio DJ on WDRQ and WJLB (both in Detroit) under the pseudonym "The Wizard." Mills' sets were a highlight of the nightly show. In going on to create his own music Jeff Mills is credited with laying the foundations for the highly influential Detroit Techno collective, Underground Resistance, alongside 'Mad' Mike Banks. Just like the band Public Enemy, these men confronted the mainstream music industry with revolutionary rhetoric. They were ‘men on a mission’, aiming at giving techno more content and meaning...Mills would never leave UR officially, but later on he went his own way. He moved to New York and after a short stay in Berlin (Tresor) ended up in Chicago. There in 1992, with fellow Detroit native Robert Hood, he set up his most important record label, Axis, aiming for a simpler more minimal sound than most of the techno being produced in those years. ]Later sub-labels were created:Purpose Maker, Tomorrow, and 6277. His albums and EPs are mostly separate tracks of his compositions, which Mills would mix into the live DJ sets for which he became a legend. Mills has been credited for his exceptional turntable skills. Tracks are almost chopped to bits to showcase the strongest fragments for his relentless sound collages. He usually uses three decks, 4 CD players and a Roland 909 drum-machine and up to seventy records in one hour. His "Exhibitionist" DVD, from 2004, features him mixing live on three decks and CD player in a studio, stark and simple. There are several mixes, one of Axis tracks, two of Jeff Mills tracks, and another of various artists. The mixes are shot from several cameras, up close, and his long graceful fingers fly over the gear, furious, his genius and skill on full display.
“Blue Potential” was recorded with the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra (see above) under Alain Altinoglu. There is a DVD of the concert at which the album was recorded, an opportunity to see Mills in action, live on stage.
Mills’ latest album is entitled “Sleeper Wakes”, a final series after “Contact Special” (see above) and “One Man Spaceship” all of which have been originated in Japan. The entire series summarizes Mills’ ongoing fascination to the Universe: In it, he created the story of himself being contacted by an extraterrestrial being and thus decides to leave Earth for an extended period of time of four years to travel through Outer Space in search of new worlds. In reality Mills did not go back to Japan for four years until January 1, 2010 when he made a special performance in Tokyo based on this concept. (see above)
