Hybrid Life - Summer Showcase

  • HYBRID LIFE SUMMER SHOWCASE After an inspiring launch showcase featuring a stand out set by Joy Orbison, Hybrid Life return for their second event, with a naturally different twist. Where the launch was a snapshot of contemporary cutting edge sounds, taking in techno, garage, dubstep and house, this Hybrid Life Summer Showcase will explore three distinct yet connected visions of house and techno. We’ll be presenting Redshape and Actress, artists whose individual sounds show clear inspiration from the Detroit masters, yet who create highly personal interpretations resulting in two arresting and original examples of 21st century techno. Completing our trio of guests is Theo Parrish. An esteemed member of Detroit techno’s so called Third Wave, Theo’s sound sculptures have been as much debated as they have inspired, and are a clear precursor, in terms of form and construction, for the work of his two fellow guests. Once again we’ll be giving our guests a taste of London warehouse culture, as we return to our raw bunker like space in the heart of Shoreditch. Along with our resident Alex Jones, we’ll get a closer look at the work of these three Detroit inspired artists and see how their original visions interact. THEO PARRISH Where Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson are considered to be the First Wave of Detroit Techno, and Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, and Jeff Mills amongst the Second Wave, Theo Parrish’s recognition as a leader of the Third Wave is more than fitting when you consider his artistry, his history, and his passion. For this Hybrid Life showcase he will play a special three hour set that will no doubt encompass a wide range of his extensive musical influences. For a man who rejects music genres, fusing techno, house, disco, jazz and afro beat is completely natural, as he works the EQ hard to transform often well known tracks into stunning live interpretations. His DJ sets are legendary, and the experience for the dancer, like all great art, can be challenging for some but is ultimately enriching and rewarding. REDSHAPE The freshness Redshape brings to his live sets is an ideology to be greatly admired. He rages against a sea of monotony and the formulaic with his seemingly improvised techno jam sessions, a very organic approach to an electronic output. It’s not just a commendable standard but also an inspiring experience when you consider the quality and depth of his music. His analogue techno sound, with its Detroit sensibilities, has found its way into the cherished hands of esteemed artists like Ame, Laurent Garnier and Cassy. Taking to the stage in a red mask of course adds to the aura, but also takes the ego out of the equation and leaves for admiration the energy and craft he puts into his impressive live shows. ACTRESS Dazed&Confused described Actress as ‘an artist so underground even his own friends doubt his existence.’ While this might once have been true, it’s not a statement that will hold up for long, underground he may remain but his existence is no longer in any doubt. His record label Werk has produced some of the most innovative electronic music from any British label in the last 5 years. As an artist in his own right, from his debut album Hazyville to Splazsh his hotly anticipated long player on Honest Jons, he has demonstrated a non-conformist approach to creating beautiful techno that embodies its time. When you consider this musical output, his love of electro, and his comparisons to Anthony Shakir, then his set at this Hybrid Life showcase becomes a very intriguing expectation. ALEX JONES Inspired by a mixture of the golden age of tech-house and the disparate, oddball sounds of Koze, Wruhme and Bodycode, Alex Jones is by no means a straightforward DJ. His ability to switch from hypnotic Motor City grooves to awkward, angular curveballs and back seamlessly is captivating, refreshing and has meant his stewardship of the brilliant Hypercolour and Glass Table imprints has resulted in some of the most interesting output around; Kyle Hall, Jimmy Edgar, Glimpse, Soul Clap – to name just a few. His own productions more than live up to the hype too, with Dinky, Marcus Fix, Akufen & Wolf + Lamb all championing his off-kilter house and techno characterised by an almost bullish drive to be different. ROOM 2 – ELECTRIC MINDS / LOVE FEVER While doom-mongers hail the impending death of London clubs, underground outfits like Electric Minds and Love Fever fly in the face of these fears with quality events, progressive sounds, and earnest endeavour. For this Hybrid Life Summer Showcase the driving forces behind both of these crews get together for an all encompassing underground musical trip from techno to deep disco. In creating Electric Minds Dolan Bergin has made an international impression with his label receiving support from the likes of The Revenge, Ame and Lindstrom. The Electric Minds loft parties this year are equally strong featuring bookings for Move D, Marcus Worgull and Commix. No stranger to Loft parties themselves, Alex Bradley and Andy Bird from Love Fever return to Hybrid Life duties on the back of another of their stellar sessions, this time with boy du-jour Hunee causing a stir with their loyal crew. This pair effortlessly play across the board and will no doubt be in control of this room which will be adorned with rare & original photos of Studio 54 at its most debauched.
