Disconnected Presents 002: ROBERT HOOD | Plantation | June 26th 2010
Robert Hood makes minimal Detroit techno with an emphasis on soul and experimentation over flash and popularity. Hood was a founding member, along with Jeff Mills and Mike Banks, of the Underground Resistance label, whose influential releases throughout the early and mid '90s helped change the face of modern Detroit techno and sparked a creative renaissance. Infusing elements of acid and industrial into a potent blend of Chicago house and Detroit techno, UR's aesthetic project and militant business philosophy were (and remain) singular commitments in underground techno. Hood also owns and operates the M-plant imprint (including the two sublabels Drama and Duet), through which he's released the Bulk of his solo material.
Hood’s latest album titled Omega, was written and produced as a soundtrack to one of Hood's favourite films, a 1971 sci-fi film called The Omega Man, which was based on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel I Am Legend. “There was the remake with Will Smith, I am Legend,” Hood told FACT. “But I’ve had this vision of doing this project even long before that. You know the story: Charlton Heston plays the last person on Earth, everyone has died. This man is running out of hope, running out of faith. He is this kind of Messiah type figure. The music I’ve done is sort of a loose interpretation of this precept. I just imagined myself if I were commissioned to do this soundtrack. What would it be like? And so, this is what it is”. The album will be available on 3x12”, CD and digital via Hood’s own M-Plant label on June 21 and will be proceeded by a long over due tour of Australia, which will see him playing in Perth, Melbourne and of course Sydney for Disconnected Presents on the 26th June.
