Growing up, my Toronto was spent sleeping in the back of a car on 400-series highways; flying across the GTA to go to some auntie and uncle’s party. On our way home, my family would talk about the food, the gossip, and especially the sound– the perfect party meticulously blended Bollywood disco, bhangara, rap, R&B, soca, dancehall and maybe a boy band track thrown in to appease the kids. At home, we would watch Electric Circus, Rap City, The Wedge and 106 & Park. We would flip through CDs at the Markville HMV and later pirate them on Limewire.
Chatting with Alanna Stuart about the musical lineage of this city– I said that the city’s cultural plurality makes it the best place to eat and a singular place to listen. She agreed, but distinguished Toronto’s indebtedness to Jamaican culture: “where else do they sell beef patties on the subway tracks?” And how true is that? Toronto via Kingston by way of London and New York. This city is written in dub.
Cal C, don of Modern Art, grew up in the same Toronto as I did. He digs deep into its history to pull up irreverent dancehall, soca and house gems that have surely shaken booties at dance parties in this city’s bygone eras. Pillow Talk is a collective project that was initiated in 2017 by Akash Bansal (Tender Buttons) and Kourosh Dehghani (Ensoul). It is a globe-trotting open format party focused on experiments in dance music. Expect the unexpected— but most of all, expect pleasure.
