  • In a gig put together by Honey Dijon for her Honeyverse takeover, we’re treated to Alewya’s renegade pop and the unapologetic hip-hop of Cakes Da Killa. Alewya is a child of many worlds: born to an Ethiopian mother, Egyptian father and raised in west London. Now, as a multi-hyphenate artist – singer, musician, painter, sculptor – Alewya draws from many worlds, too. At home, her parents’ Arabian and East African music influence gave her a spiritual release. Out in the streets, London’s pulsing sound systems gave her a physical release, as she raved to funky house drums, junglist breakbeats and the meditative bassweight of Caribbean dub music. These inspirations have all come together in Alewya’s sound: a raw, renegade blend of the devotional rhythms of East Africa and the funk ‘n’ grit of Black Britain. In 2019, she met Shy FX in a London club and, after seeing her perform, he became her manager. Teaming up in the studio with Shy FX, Alewya wrote and produced her debut EP, ‘Panther In Mode.’ Cakes Da Killa is a leading figure of the queer hip-hop explosion in New York that took place in 2011. The fame brought by his witty flow and unapologetic delivery championed the acceptance of openly gay artists in hip-hop. He remains a staple for alternative voices in music, promoting black excellence as well as LGBTQ+ visibility. Cakes’ sound mixes 1990s grit with high-energy club beats, and he’s produced a string of singles with respected producers such as LSDXOXO, Honey Dijon and DJ Shiftee.
