It’s been seven years since FIST first broke out on the scene - seven years of bad luck for anyone who likes their techno neat, tidy and commodified. FIST has been a true bastion for radical, unflinching and transgressive expression in New York. The queer party blends ferociously potent sonics with a punk attitude, inviting some of the finest DJs in the world to partake in their vision. Slam certainly fits the bill. As the heads of the monumental Soma Records, their curatorial acumen has brought them in collaboration with some of techno’s most exceptional names, while their event organizing has created hubs for a global community. Most important, though: their sets are completely sick. The UK duo are devotees of techno’s most foundational properties: dynamic, massive and, of course, slamming with tons of funk, they partake in and extend a true school lineage. Isabella Koen is a US talent whose unique vision is matched only by her unyielding commitment to her art. A longtime presence in the US, Koen has long been blowing minds with her live hardware sets, where she works her arsenal machines with a commanding impunity and remarkable precision. Her most recent EP “Tip” shows her in exceptional form, operating a career high. Meanwhile, overseas bookings at Herrensauna, Draaimollen and others show the world is catching up with what’s been obvious all along. Cotton brings the fury. The New World Dysorder artist has been putting in time at some of NY’s most renegade parties and working up a lather with her EBM-infused techno beatdowns. Dive into the maelstrom. Residents Word of Command and DJ Clone complete the lineup with their signature hallucinatory, freefall-into-madness approach. Would you expect anything less?
Berlin’s BAUGRUPPE90 make their debut at STUDIO. Across their productions, the German duo keeps the groove tight and the mood naughty. Their sound hits with a well-crafted impact, but keeps a tech-y bounce and an effervescent lightness that calls back to the classic late-90s sound of Detroit. Sevyn 0000 touches down from LA, infusing STUDIO with a muscular, pounding intensity. A DJ with impressive range, Sevyn 0000 can both slam it with the best of them and conjure ominous, paranoid atmospheres that simmer with enticing dread. Sekucci supplies the bubbles. A DJ with strong roots in NY’s queer, Black community, Sekucci’s mixes pop with a cracking energy and an overflow of hedonistic freedom.
