Woodbridge Festival Pre-Carnival and Festival Launch Party

Host DJ Ben Osborne (Noise of Art) and visuals by Your Mum On Notting Hill Carnival weekend - a Windrush warm-up session celebrating 40 years since Aswad's seminal LP Live & Direct & UK Sound System Culture Woodbridge festival London Warm-up and Pre-Carnival Windrush Sound Sound System Celebration - Aswad 40 years Live and Direct LP. On Saturday 26th August - the day before Notting Hill Carnival - Woodbridge Festival of Art and Music presents a London Launch Party and Carnival warm-up session, to celebrate 40 years since Aswad's seminal UK reggae LP "Live & Direct" was recorded at Notting Hill Carnival in 1983. The night, part of a summer long celebration of Windrush 75, also kicks off 2023's Woodbridge Festival week of events in Suffolk, including Elmhurst Park event on the weekend of 1 and 2 September. The London launch celebrates the UK's far flung and deep-rooted Sound System culture - not least Ipswich’s own Sound Systems, which stretch back to the 1960s. With systems from London, Leeds and Ipswich taking part, EartH's state of the art L Acoustics 3D sound system will show-case new live Aswad recordings, remixed as cutting-edge 3 Dimensional spatial mixes for the venues in-built L-Isa sound system, with specially commissioned visuals by Your Mum. Suffolks' underground Sound System culture, which goes back to the 1960s, is represented by members of Ashanti, Daddy Turbo and RastaYard. Leeds, London and Suffolk based label and hip hop collective Open Src Music, will present new set of bass music with Leeds MC OGR (Ital Rockers) live. DJ Sham will be representing Brixton’s Turner Prize nominated Trans/ non-binary sound system, B.O.S.S, who build on the culture’s message of liberation and freedom. Plus more to be announced. The festival is grateful for support from DLUCH Windrush Day 75 Grant. Other events in the 2023 Festival calendar - National and local acts celebrate Windrush 75 at events in Suffolk and London from June - August -Woodbridge Festvial Week: 26 August - 3 September. Acts include Aswad, Jazzie B (of Soul II Soul), A Man Called Adam, Ben Osborne, Caswell, Chris Coco, Jimi K-Tel - Sancho Panza, Nathan X , Ipswich Sound systems Ashanti, Bopper Ranking/ Freedom, RastaYard, Daddy Turbo, Trevor Jones (Aswad, Jah Warriors), Sun Cutter/ Kevin Pearce, First Light presents Chloe, Latin Heat, Head Funk, Charlie Law, Ellie Tree, Reggae Choir and more, plus Arts Area, Wellness Park, Literary Stage, Eco Area and Kids Zone, Food Village with seven hand selected local suppliers and four bars offering craft beers, small producer wines, local ice cream and Suffolk Coffee pod. - Anchors Aweigh - the arts trail involving 12 Anchors Mmade by 12 Community Groups. A project created by the l artist Alice Stallard, the community groups who decorated an anchor include Dora Brown, Jetty Lane, Just42, Aspire Black Suffolk, Suffolk ArtLink, Woodbridge Art Club, Woodbridge Memory Café, Woodbridge Prep School, Woodbridge Primary School, Woodbridge Festival and 5th Woodbridge Sea Scout Squirrels. - Projections on historic Tide Mill and Windrush Art Trail Exhibtion feature the ‘lost’ 1962 Windrush photographs by Howard Grey and contempoary ‘Black Suffolk’ portraits by John Ferguson, across nine venues. - Caribbean Street Feast By The River - Reggatta Carnival By the River - The Summer Sessions - Free Audio Visual and Art workshops throughout summer woodbridgefestival.com
