Planetarium: Zach Cowie, Jason Lindner and Justin Carter

  • Planetarium is an event where people come to listen deeply. We ask everyone who attends to remain silent in the listening area and to keep all conversations to a whisper in other parts of the space. We also ask that there is no phone use in the entire space. If that sounds good to you, read on... - - - - - - - - Planetarium lands in the private loft in Ridgewood for the beginning of its monthly 2023 - 2024 series. There's a beautiful hi-fi system in the space, and there are plentiful vibes. Bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows or anything else you'd like to make yourself comfortable. We do a small amount of reservations so that there's room for folks to lie down. For the first voyage of the season, we've asked Jason Lindner to perform live. Jason Lindner is a lifelong keyboardist whose musical adventures saw him lead an influential big band at Smalls in the late 90s and early aughts, act as bandleader for both Lauryn Hill and Meshell Ndegeocello; play in the core unit on David Bowie's final album, Blackstar; and lead a future-jazz trio Now vs. Now. Jason has been a part of the Planetarium family since its earliest days, performing his own solo ambient and experimental works many times throughout the years as well as performing with Justin Carter around the release of Justin's solo album in 2017. Jason will do his thing in the midst of records played by Zach Cowie and Justin Carter. Zach Cowie has spent his life in music, from labels to management to adventures in hi-fi. He's recorded mixes as Turquoise Wisdom for the Aquarium Drunkard for over thirteen years, toured as a DJ with Animal Collective and Fleet Foxes and, as a music supervisor, has unearthed obscure, perfectly selected music for films like The Little Hours and Judas & The Black Messiah and TV shows like Master of None and On Becoming A God In Central Florida. Beyond all that, he's a musical wizard, always with some vinyl incantation we've never heard. When we asked him to play Planetarium, he said, "If I don't make a few people cry, I did it wrong." Bring your tissues, folks. Justin Carter is the co-creator and resident DJ of Planetarium, as well as the co-creator and a resident DJ of Nowadays, Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday. Justin's skill for unearthing emotional and cathartic sounds, whether they're blues 78s from the 1920s or digital-only stripped-down drum-n-bass tracks, has been honed over a lifetime in music, twenty years of which have been spent DJing. Dinner will be served between 7pm and 8pm by Marisa Mendez Marthaller aka Soup Doula. There will be two soups (one of them vegan) served with hunks of She Wolf Bread. Dinner is included in the price of your ticket. (You are welcome to bring your own dinner if you have specific dietary needs.) Marisa will serve the soups between 7pm and 8pm, when we'll keep the lights up and have a more social hour before we go deep. At 8pm, soup will become self-serve for any late arrivals (or takers on seconds), and we'll turn the lights down and go far out into space. You can bring your own drinks (and your own cups). We'll have all the creature comforts that you might otherwise need inside, so you never have to leave the bubble we're creating. In order to give more people the opportunity to join us, we limit tickets to two per person. Please do not make multiple orders. We will only honor two tickets purchased under one name, even if you make multiple purchases. Also, because we're doing this at a private space, we'll only send the location info to people who reserve space in advance. We'll send out the location from [email protected] on the morning of the session. Make sure to safe list that email address so you receive the notification. If you have not received this email by noon on Saturday, November 18, but have purchased a ticket, search your spam, junk, promotions and other folders for an email from [email protected] or [email protected]. The subject is always something like: "Please Read: All The Info For Planetarium". So you know how to plan, we can tell you it's not too far from Nowadays, less than five minutes from the Halsey L. If tickets are sold out, activate the notification function on this page, and you'll get an email if tickets become available. The ticket resale system stays open and active until noon on the day before the event. After that, all ticket sales have to be final so that we can ensure that everyone who buys a ticket gets the address. We've posted three tiers of tickets. $60 is the standard contribution we need from everyone to make the night work. We're also offering supplemented $30 tickets for those without the means to purchase a full price ticket, and we're offering supporter tickets for those that can afford to supplement the lower priced tickets. The $30 tickets are on an honor system basis. Please only take them if you need them, and please support at the higher level if you are able. We're looking forward to getting lost in sound with you. Until then...
