When Shroom Rave hit the Los Angeles underground at the beginning of 2023, it was a revelation. A psychedelic Sunday party with a cracking dancefloor collectively peaking to the sounds of euphoric house and cosmic disco… without a drop of alcohol? It was a refreshing relief from the nightlife status quo—and the feeling of pure joy in the room showed.
While Shroom Rave embodies the current psychedelic zeitgeist in the dawning era of decriminalization, it is also a return to the roots of rave culture, to the lineage of the Loft and the Muzic Box and the Paradise Garage—a tradition upheld today by parties like the acid-fueled No Way Back in Detroit (and psychedelic forest raves around the world).

So on Sunday, October 22, Shroom Rave producer Michelle Lhooq is teaming up with her friends at DoubleBlind Magazine to open the portal again. R&R: A Shroom Rave Spa will take place at the queer-run arts space Navel in Downtown Los Angeles from 3-10pm. It will be a party unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.
In the basement mushroom grotto—a cavernous new space that has never been open to the public—acid techno god Carlos Souffront will take the helm. Flying in direct from Detroit, Souffront is going to plunge us down the psychedelic wormhole with a three-hour set delivered with strutting eccentricity of a true musical maestro. The ridiculously talented Shroom Rave resident DJ Ty will be on warm-up duty, serving up a spread of Detroit-inflected tasty cuts.
The hallway taking you from downstairs to upstairs will feature a custom, mushroom-inspired perfume installation by UFO Parfums—Eau de Penis Envy, anyone?
In the sun-dappled ritual space, plant medicine practitioner Skye Weaver will lead a guided cannabis ceremony, showing us how the sacred plant can facilitate a deeper connection to spirit and body. Matthewdavid (label don of Leaving Records) will perform from his recent releases ‘Mycelium Music’ and ‘On Mushrooms.’ He will also be joined by acclaimed saxophonist Hailey Niswanger for an improvisatory jam session. Iranian-American musician Maral will deliver an ambient set with her signature blend of Iranian folk and pop music, while Scent Rave’s Maxwell Williams will open the space with a deeply vibey set of music to meditate to.
Did we mention there will be a special performance of Iranian whirling dervishes? This ancient Sufi tradition is meant to get a person into a state of ego death, mimicking the psychedelic experience.
Of course, there will also be a tranquil spa space, with bodyworkers Jeanne Ho (Remember This Feeling) and Lisa Parker (Trilome Academy) offering massages to relieve pain, tension, and trauma. In this quiet chill zone, you will find deeply experienced psychedelic integration guides led by Tristan Victor, who will be here to support any kind of emotional experience or questions you may be having.
Stop by the tea ceremony room, where .standstill will be serving their "Gui Fei Oolong,” a bug-bitten oolong from a biodynamic farm in Dong Ding, Taiwan. Inside this glass, soundproofed room, Heidi Rushforth will be grilling mushrooms over a bed of hot salts, sampling the sounds of popping and sizzling as performance art. (Yes, you’ll be able to try them, too.)
Of course—it’s not a psychedelic rave without some psychoactive treats. While R&R will not be serving alcohol, we will have a spread of (legal) psychedelics at the bar, including kava and kratom drinks, cannabis cocktails, amanita mushroom gummies, and more.
