We're putting on one of our now-rare editions of Mister Saturday Night at Nowadays in just under a month.
We're always stoked to get a chance to make the night happen, this time around especially so because we're hosting the great Chee Shimizu for an opening set.
Chee's musical accomplishments are vast. He runs Organic Music, one of the best record stores in the world; his record catalog, Obscure Sound, is, in the words of Resident Advisor, "a kind of Michelin Guide for record nerds... The book's prescience can be seen in how many of the records it lists have been reissued since it was published." He has been at the forefront of the re-exploration of long forgotten Japanese records, through his Japanism imprint, as well as behind a seminal compilation for the Better Days label, featuring icons such as Yasukai Shimizu, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Midori Takada. His deep listening nights at SHeLTeR, a hi-fi room in a suburb of Tokyo, attract underground cognoscenti from all over the world, and his own musical productions are otherworldly collages and deep dance floor builders.
Most often, when a special guest plays, they are on at peak time or closing out the night. In this case, we felt having Chee open the night would be the best fit, allowing him to start with a clean slate, drawing on the listening music that he is known for, as well as building the night with the left-field dance floor cuts that he's been digging for for years.
Once Chee gets things swirled up, Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin will play to the end.
