Jazz Rooms presents the return of Brazilian Funk Affair – a monster party of Brazilian grooves, both old and new that sold out the Basement twice in 09. It's late '60s, early '70s Rio de Janeiro where, for a few glorious years in the sun-drenched ghettos, the sun, samba & funk fused in a heady mixture of afros, black power and huge funk parties. This is the story of Brazil's most forgotten movement - Black Rio. Black Rio mirrored the struggles in North America, maintaining a particularly close link to the soul brothers in Harlem. Artists like Sergio Mendes, Joao Donato and Marcos Valle drew from the US soul and funk of Motown, Stax and James Brown to create their own blend of 'Soul Brasileiro'. Whilst Tropicalia had given Brazil’s musicians and songwriters a powerful political voice during the ‘60s, the Black Rio movement had to battle the odds – black soul was perceived as not being authentically Brazilian and the country was under the rule of General Emilio Garrastazu Medici’s oppressive dictatorship which effectively suffocated cultural expression between 1969 and 1974. Still, the movement took hold as disenchanted black Brazilian youth mirrored the struggles of their contemporaries in the US with their own potent brew of samba, soul and funk. Black Rio parties attracted thousands, bands including Banda Black Rio and Azymuth were created from the scene and music figureheads like Jorge Ben and Milton Nascimento began exploring more dense, Afro directions. This rich legacy has been carried on by artists like Seu Jorge and Marcello D2. The 11 piece I Like it Like That Orchestra fresh from 2 stunning Brazilian Funk affair sets last year are returning to the Basement to unleash a live mix of Brazilian beats, Bossa Jazz & Funk from the carnival capitol, giving us a snapshot of the 70s Black Rio movement and getting you on the floor all night long. Pure percussion pressure comes courtesy of Samba Soul Kingdom – a hard hitting new live Samba/Batucada drum section to get you just in the right mood. Djs include Russ Dewbury ( Jazz Rooms) alongside special guest Michael Correa dropping everything from Samba to Soul, Bossa to Batucada , Brasilian beats to Drum ‘n’ bass. Its going to be monster party, so people, get on your Rio shoes and enjoy the grooves. Further info from, Www.jazzrooms.com.au Www.myspace/russdewburymusic www.thebasement.com.au
