- Laine is continuing its Label Night event series to highlight the diverse catalogues of indie, boutique and archival labels and the people behind them. The series that was kicked off with the help of our big favourite Habibi Funk (DE), will continue under the curation of Gareth Stephens and Gary Johnson from Brighton-based Mr Bongo! From humble beginnings in the London basement of Daddy Kool’s reggae shop on Berwick Street in 1989, the label is now seen as the standard bearer for Latin music outside the Americas, specialising also in art house and world cinema to release lost classics from around the globe. Over its first 10 years of operation, Mr Bongo moved three times to Soho and opened also in Shibuya, Japan, until its founder David Buttle moved the label’s office to Brighton in 1999, closed the shops in London and Shibuya in 2003 and opened a new one in Brighton in 2016 where it continues to this day. On the 12th of January, Gareth and Gary will bring the gems from the Mr Bongo’s extensive catalogue of more than 30 years to Uus Laine, filling the night with a variety of tunes, really anything from underground hip-hop, reggae to music from Brazil, Africa and Latin America to nourish our vitamin D deficiencied bodies.
