Ryoji Ikeda's universe glitches through VEGA
Be transported through Ryoji Ikeda's latest album Ultratronics when he presents it live on April 17th at Store VEGA.
Throughout his long career, Ryoji Ikeda has built a reputation as one of the few international artists who work effortlessly across both audio and visual media.
He is Japan's leading electronic composer and visual artist. Ikeda focuses on the essential properties of sound and the visuals of light through both mathematical precision and mathematical aesthetics. He carefully orchestrates sound, images, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical concepts in immersive live performances and installations.
In 2022, he premiered his new live audiovisual set Ultratronics, which has been described as one of his most intricate yet accessible works. Throughout the 17 songs, he has incorporated inspiration from 80s electro-industrial. For the show in VEGA, Ikeda will present an audiovisual concert based on the album.
Music magazine Pitchfork awarded the album a 7.5 rating and gave the following quote:
“Much of Ultratronics is a patchwork of genres, as if Ikeda is DJing a retrospective of his own career. The breakneck shifts may threaten the coherence of the album, but Ikeda weaves a thrilling panorama out of these various strands: a pummeling industrial beat more appropriate for Throbbing Gristle or Esplendor Geométrico on “Ultratronics 09,” his most compelling IDM since Dataplex’s “Data.Matrix” on “Ultratronics 11,” and beautiful ambience on “Ultratronics 14”. “
