" For as long as I can remember, probably the day they painted Club Vinyl white and changed the name to ‘Arc’, I have been inspired to start a Sunday afternoon party. I dreamt of a relaxed space where the focus was solely on the music, a room painted black where the bar was in a seperate area and the sound system punched you square in the gut. The energy obverse of a frenetic Saturday night party, where the music could stretch out and ebb and flow in an indirect way, a progression that wasn’t simply a quest to build toward a manic peak. Non-linear. I wanted to have a party where I could make a mess with my friends playing all different kinds of music and feel no pressure for it all to come together. A sonic sandbox. Nebulous.
So when Eli told me he was opening Gabriela and to come check it out I was intrigued yet hesitant. I have gone on this walkthrough a hundred times over, but unlike the countless others, this time it delivered. And when he said “the space is small, I think it would be cool if you did something different, like played all stuff in the vein of the ‘slow to speak’ reissues - Siouxsie & The Banshees, Fleetwood Mac, Eddie Hazel” I was sold!
