Over the last 13 years, Ron Morelli has become a major and influential fixture in the world of contemporary electronic music. The New Yorker has single-handedly carved out a unique path of his own, with his often-imitated, rarely duplicated L.I.E.S. Records label, which has released almost 300 records to date. Morelli has, in his own words, “unintentionally shaken things up" in the electronic music world. Reaching global acclaim, Morelli and L.I.E.S. are looked to as a centerpiece of this wave, continuing to confound expectations, ever evolving and never staying stagnant.
Like so many others in the global techno community, we were shocked and devastated to learn of the passing of Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant. We ruminated about how best to fill the time slot he was meant to play, while ensuring the night is meaningful. As Juan was a resident of their annual Tresor 313 party, we have invited BMG of Interdimensional Transmissions to close the night. We feel this is the most respectful solution to a truly heartbreaking situation, and it is our genuine hope that the night provides cathartic solace to all who attend.
"[Silent Servant] was a visionary multidisciplinary artist whose work across graphic design, DJing and production helped define the contemporary techno canon, as well as its visual representation on underground label art and party flyers. Born in Guatemala and raised in Los Angeles, he was swept up by the romantic keenings of The Smiths and the shoegaze bands coming out on indie powerhouses like Sub Pop. As he grew up and experienced the colliding worlds of Downtown LA warehouse parties and early Berlin techno, he distilled these influences into a language that became uniquely his own. According to friend and collaborator Telefon Tel Aviv, "If ever there was a sound of the LA underground, it was surely him."
