Dancing between Arab and European traditions. Avéčko presents the AV show of Deena Abdelwahed and her new album Jbal Rrsas
Heavy beats, a sultry atmosphere and the anticipation of something big to come. Producer Deena Abdelwahed's Jbal Rrsas album starts off slow like a fully loaded freight train and continues towards the varied soundscapes of traditional genres of Egypt or Tunisia, blending them with ease with the rhythm of European raves. Deena Abdelwahed returns to Prague after a two-year break from her DJ set at the Agnes Convent, this time with a live performance and a new album, for which she has also created an audiovisual show that reacts in real time to musical stimuli. As part of the Ávéčko series organised in collaboration with Theremin and Heartnoize, Abdelwahed will perform in the functionalist space of the Presence cinema on Saturday 20 April 2024.
Although the Tunisian producer relocated to Paris in 2016, her connection to the region from which she hails and her interest in local musical traditions has followed her throughout her career. With her debut album Khonnar (2018), she explored sonic territories at the intersection of Arab-Tunisian music and electronica, while thematizing the social issues of her native country and European colonialism in her lyrics. With her current release, Jbal Rrsas, she then embarked on an even more detailed exploration of local genres to play with their rhythmic and melodic structures. Bahrain's polyrhythm-based khaleeji meets dubstep or footwork. Resident Advisor magazine also reflects on the diversity of traditions and approaches."The most radical element of the album is the absence of binary demarcations: between East and West, between traditional and contemporary, between listening to music in a club and at home. Instead, Jbal Rrsas presents a space where different influences meet to the accompaniment of heavy bass beats, resulting in the creation of a new musical vocabulary in real time."
Deena Abdelwahed will be accompanied on stage by multi-instrumentalist Khli Epi and Swedish artist Niculin Barandun, who will take care of the visual component of the concert. Standing room tickets are available at Goout for 490 CZK (20 EUR).
