Acclaimed acid, electro, wonky disco, ambient and psychedelic pioneer, Richard Norris makes a guest star appearance at Ben Osborne’s new DJ night in Farringdon, alongside residents Bobby Bucys, Itchy Soul, Neil Thornton and VJ Girl In A T-Shirt.
As revealed in his forthcoming book (Strange Things Are Happening), Richard Norris had his first clubbing experience at the original White Trash, in the early '80s. The night helped propel Richard into lifelong career in music. He was responsible for the first UK acid house record, Jack The Tab (which he points out wasn’t really acid house), is half of chart topping electronic duo The Grid, with Dave Ball of Soft Cell, and half of Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve, with Trash night clubs’s Erol Alken). In short, an altogether perfect second guest following Justin Robertson's fab set at White Trash’s opening night.
White Trash channels influences from similarly named institutions in clubland history. The original White Trash pioneered early ’80’s electro in London in 1982. Berlin’s White Trash rocked Germany’s new capital in the early 2000s. Erol Alkan’s Trash night shredded The End’s dancefloor in the mid-Naughties electroclash era. Today’s White Trash takes place at the iconic, tile-clad interior of White Bear, London and Brighton music mainstay Mick Robinson’s (aka Peli Rocco) new venue.
Described as a 'polymath' by Time Out, White Trash’s Ben Osborne is a DJ, writer, award winning creative producer and founder of Noise of Art, a collective which marries music with art, film and other disciplines. He DJs clubs internationally and presents radio shows for Slack City Radio, on DAB in Manchester, Brighton, Norwich and Portsmouth (he formerly did dance shows for Xfm and NME Radio). A proflific scribe for magazines such as DJ Mag and newspapers, he’s written books on the history of electronic music and the Arctic Monkeys.
Laser Magnetic and Shoreditch disco veteran Neil Thornton made his mark when he started nights at the infamous ‘Disco Pub’, before going on to become chef-de-party at Disappearing Dinning Club. North London’s Itchy Soul crew can be found on Smithfield’s very own Music Box Radio, as well as DJing at various London hideaways. In common with other DJs tonight, Bobby Bucys also broadcasts on radio - this time for his own Ipswich based station. Visuals come courtesy of Girl In AT-Shirt.
