We welcome you for the fifth edition of Red Museum. Our first headline act is DJ JM, renowned for his hard stomping techno releases on TSVI’s Nervous Horizons, NKC’s Even The Strong and Goon Club Allstars. His work rate is second to none, having produced untold hundreds of “zany but functional” club hitters (his words), cementing him as perhaps the key player of what some insist on calling Hard Drum.
Travelling over from Vilnius, Lithuania to link up with TSVI, Wallwork and NKC in London in 2016, DJ JM was a pivotal member of the UK’s percussive club scene throughout the late 2010s. With a natural flair for rhythms and a creative approach to sampling, DJ JM constructed idiosyncratic and increasingly freaky drum workouts at a somewhat alarming rate. Relocating from Copenhagen to Brussels in 2020, DJ JM found a solid footing in the Belgian party capital’s active musical underground. This coincided with DJ Stingray making ‘Ray Mound’ one of his set staples, a bouncy industrial-electro track from DJ JM’s standout EP on Nervous Horizon No Days Off, inspiring him to lean into more pummelling sonic territory. His new EP, Abnormal, released with long term collaborators and friends Nervous Horizon, is his most accomplished work yet.
We also invite Oslo based Ingrate (formerly Kid Antoine of the defunct but legendary Her Records label). A frequent collaborator and b2b partner with Warp’s Oli XL, Ingrate found a natural home on his label W-I with debut single Crypto Poser, an entirely new kind of techy house banger - twisted, cheeky and satisfyingly complex.
After another EP of functionally fidgety club tracks (With A System In Mind), Ingrate delivered A Special Feeling - one of the best mixtapes of 2022 - which eschewed the staid and clinical palette of modern dance music in favour of organic textures, guitars, sunlight and warmth.
Last year’s A Melody Inside EP was his most complete vision yet, a mesmerizingly intricate collection of razor sharp techy bangers and warm, soul-enhancing melodies. Ingrate’s productions are notable for their clean precision and craftsmanlike qualities. However where all too often this approach can come at a cost, sacrificing substance for technique, Ingrate’s music never skimps on heart and soul. His delicately euphoric melodies and satisfying club drums strike directly at the core of what makes dance music special. In his words - it might just make you feel something.
On support we have the fabled Boosterhooch. The phrase Local Legend is thrown around a lot in Resident Advisor club night descriptions, but never has it been more apt than when describing Boosterhooch. Sometimes called Glasgow’s hardest working DJ, Boosterhooch is a veritable trooper of the Glasgow club scene, consistently making things happen at the nexus of ‘weird’ and ‘fun’ for the better part of decade. Currently, Boosterhooch is a resident at La Cheetah with the recurring club night Clank, and her Events Research Programme (ERP) just kicked off 2024 at EXIT with the year’s first barn burner. She continues to use ERP as a hub for experimentation featuring performances from across the Glasgow experimental scene, and even makes her own brand of weirdo noise under the moniker Han. As a DJ, Boosterhooch is versatile and unpredictable, equally skilled at holding the attention of a packed club at peak time and setting the scene through the glycerin haze of the warm up slot.
As usual, host, resident and curator of the Red Museum Akumu will be kicking things off, cultivating a heady atmosphere somewhere between sleaze and euphoria. Expect video game music, rap instrumentals and crunchy low-bpm hard-techno experiments. With any luck you’ll feel like you’ve mysteriously phased out of Renfield Street and into some kind of cyberpunk Black Lodge.
