  • Well it’s that time of the year again, Red Bull Music Academy is teaming up with the country’s hottest promoters to bring you the planets hottest acts. After the phenomenal show that was Kode9 in 2009, the line-up for this year’s event is just breathtaking. We bring you not only one of the world’s best producers but three! That’s right three of the most cutting edge producers going around playing in your home town in one of Sydney’s best venues. MARTYN, ILLUM SPHERE and TOKIMONSTA represent the RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY for 2010, proudly presented to you by none other than INDEX and SPACE IS THE PLACE. After a long, long wait we finally get to witness MARTYN in the flesh. Without doubt one of most exciting producers of the last few years, Martyn’s sound has developed to be become almost a genre of its own. It’s a little Dubstep, Drum and Bass, House and Techno all at once and in a unique Martyn kind of way. After many attempts to get him to tour here we finally get the opportunity in 2010, at the top of his game and at a phenomenal event. Wow! But there’s more! ILLUM SPHERE and TOKIMONSTA are two of the hottest new producers to hit the scene in the last couple of years. Manchester producer, Illum sphere has already released on Martyn’s acclaimed 3024 label as well as numerous releases on Fat City. Touted by many as one of the most unique producers in the UK right now, his music has been getting support from people as divers as Thom Yorke, Benji B and Gas Lamp Killer. Likewise, Los Angeles producer TOKIMONSTA has been rolling with LA’s elite and is mainstay at shows with none other than Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, and The Gaslamp Killer. No surprise then that she is the first female to be signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label! So then, one of the biggest names in electronic dance music, accompanied by two rising stars of the scene, with local support from our own big shot producer, Harmonic 313 with Space in Place and Index Dj’s. Spectacular! The Forum is the place to be on Saturday September 25th! INDEX, SITP & RBMA PRESENT Line-up MARTYN(3024, Tectonic, Hyperdub, Applepips) ULLUM SPHERE(3024, Fat City) TOKIMONSTA(Brainfeeder) HARMONIC 313(Warp, Deep Medi, Hyperdub) INDEX + SITP DJ's Saturday September 25th , The Forum, Entertainment Quarter 8pm – 2am, $15+BF via moshtix on the door MARTYN Martyn’s unique strand of bass defies easy categorisation - to his fans and admirers, it’s known simply as ‘Martyn Music.’ With a sound that has become emblematic for all that’s forward thinking in dubstep Martyn pushes a defiant out-of-the-box mentality into his every artistic venture, scorning genre convention and relentlessly embracing the new. Informed by a love for Detroit techno, Chicago house and hip-hop, encountering drum & bass in its mid-90’s golden era was the catalyst for him to develop his musical ideas and begin to lay the foundations of his career as a DJ & Producer.?? In 2005 Martyn’s own productions began to surface in the drum & bass scene, with releases on Play:Musik and Marcus Intalex’ Revolve:r imprint. The following year saw a radical shift in sound with the “Broken” / “Shadowcasting” 12”. Drawing on techno and house as much as a still fertile Dubstep scene the release heralded Martyn’s arrival beyond the world of drum & bass, with his new direction supported by DJs ranging from Kode 9 to Gilles Peterson. Building on this momentum with releases on labels such as Tempa and Applepips, the appearance on Hessle Audio of his remix of TRG’s “Broken Heart” catapulted his profile to the next level. Alongside 2008’s re-versions of Black Pocket (aka Steve Spacek), Flying Lotus & Shed , the last 18 months have seen widely acclaimed new mixes for Maximo Park and Fever Ray plus a pair of stylistically opposed but hugely successful reinterpretations of Efdemin’s Acid Bells. Teaming up with old friend Erosie (one of Europe’s most celebrated street artists), Martyn launched the 3024 label in late 2007. June 08 saw the “Natural Selection”/“Vancouver” 12” released to an avalanche of critical acclaim and dj/radio play. Swiftly followed by two inimitable remixes by Flying Lotus and 2562 the next step was a debut LP, released in April 2009 to a rapturous critical and commercial reception. Common consensus was that ‘Great Lengths’ had set a new standard in the fragmenting dubstep scene for long players. Showcasing every element of Martyn’s sound the album’s refusal to tie itself into a readily identifiable genre resonated far beyond dubstep, repeatedly occupying top 10 spots in end of year poll’s including #2 on Mixmag’s albums of the year chart. A series of album launch parties at legendary venues including Plastic People, New York’s Cielo and Arena in Berlin underlined Martyn’s progression into one of the most versatile and kinetic DJs in electronic music. His raw yet adventurous style has seen him play iconic spots including Berghain / Panoramabar, The Roxy in LA and DMZ @ Mass as well as festivals like BLOC, Mutek, Iceland Airwaves, Bestival and Sonar. 2009/2010’s marathon international touring has seen regular appearances at Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder showcases and increasingly legendary back to back sessions with Kode 9. A regular at London’s clubbing institution fabric from early in his career, Martyn was approached to mix their landmark 50th mix CD towards the end of 2009. Released the following January to reviews hailing the appearance of one of the finest mixes in the series long and illustrious history the CD added yet further to Martyn’s reputation as a guaranteed floor filler, helping further expand an ever growing international audience eager for the currently under construction LP #2. ILLUM SPHERE Described as "one of the most special and unique artists to come out of the UK" by Hyperdub first lady Ikonika, Manchester's Illum Sphere has had a busy time since his debut 'The Incoming EP' landed in 2009 on hometown label, Fat City. Winning the BBC 1xtra Urban Music Award, invitations to play at LA institution Low End Theory (only the second English person to do so after Mary Anne Hobbs) and this year's Red Bull Music Academy in London, through to remix requests from Martyn, Zed Bias and Warp Records, he has already become one the UK’s most hotly tipped producers, whilst remaining outside of the London hype machine. Add to that the gleaming praise given by all those that play his groundbreaking Hoya:Hoya night in Manchester, an EP on Martyn’s 3024 imprint, support from Radiohead front man Thom Yorke, Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B and Brainfeeder’s Gaslamp Killer, Lorn, Ras G and Daedelus, 2010 seems certain to be the year that Illum Sphere cements his place among the underground music elite. In May 2010 he launched his impressive live audio visual show with Hoya:Hoya visuals man EMN, yet again displaying the forward-thinking and groundbreaking of this talented 25 year old (preview links below). However, she has come to use this background to create vast textural soundscapes by utilizing live instruments, percussion, digital manipulation, and dusty vinyl. Through the creation of beats, she is able to fuse vintage styles with progressive sounds into something unique-all while preserving old school vibes. She is praised by the very best in avant-garde hip hop and electronica. After being highly recommended by Flying Lotus, Mary Anne Hobbs immediately featured an exclusive mix of TOKiMONSTA tracks on her BBC Radio 1 program. Since then, TOKi has become a reoccurring favorite—MAH has said, "WOW! Thisgirl is absolutely incredible" and “She’s my favorite female producer on the planet!” Not only has she caught eyes of many as one of the most talented producers worldwide, TOKi is also the first female to join Brainfeeder. Other notable features include XLR8R Magazine and Warp Records, in addition to several large multimedia features. Her live performance is exciting as well as intricate—using a laptop and other pieces of multimedia gear. She is fearless and energetic having performed with the likes of Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Gaslamp Killer, and many other of her fellow beat makers.
