Thursday Breakdown

  • Join us in our favourite cosy Friedrichshain bar for a night dedicated to the bass music. For this edition, FridaY invites some of the prominent local figures to share their experience as DJs and promoters and their tunes. Come to meet fellow bass heads and skank to dubstep, UKG, jungle, 2step and more! First off, we will be discussing the breaks & bass music scenes in Berlin with Sarah Farina (Emergent Bass) and Cate Hops (Sound System Culture). We’ll cover getting into playing bass music, growing together via womxn- & FLINTA-empowering collectives, platforms, events and workshops, sharing experience and exchanging tips. After the discussion, there will be a break for meet & greet as well as for open decks - time for all of you to get to know one another, make connections, chat and listen to music. If you’re a FLINTA DJ who is starting out and would like to spin some bassy tunes in public, get in touch! The party kicks off with a set by ZE:NA who blends influences from growing up in London and living in Bristol. Expect everything from soulful breaks and vocal gems to lush jungle. Next up will be Nasra, a Femme Bass Mafia mentee who is gaining momentum playing footwork, future bass and high energy breaks at events such as Keep Hush and Hoe_mies and making radio appearances on Rinse France and Refuge Worldwide. Closing duties will be performed by bass sisters FridaY B2B Freya Algiz who’ll exchange some UKG and unhinged breaks as well as oddball bassy cuts. Entry is donation-based for the artists and their cabs home - be sure to bring some cash (if you can afford it) xx LINEUP 20:15 - 21:00 Discussion Speakers: Sarah Farina (Emergent Bass) Cate Hops (Sound System Culture) Host: FridaY DJs: 21:30 - 23:00 ZE:NA 23:00 - 0:30 Nasra 0:30 - end FridaY B2B Freya Algiz Sarah Farina Sarah Farina is an international DJ, music producer and curator. She hosts and curates the interdisciplinary Berlin event series Emergent Bass with her friends, which focuses on the historical awareness of cultural contexts of music and celebrates and uplifts the Afro-diasporic influences in underground club culture. She’s innovative, she’s skilful, and she’s the smiling antithesis of genre cliques and sour scene elitists and sprinkles positivity over the darkest bass. What you hear is all you need to know. And what you’ll hear from Sarah Farina’s sets and music productions are seamlessly blended bass-heavy frequencies and futuristic beats with fearless forays through the hardcore continuum and beyond. It’s inclusive, forward-thinking and unrestrained. It’s a genre-rejecting style that she’s named Rainbow Bass. She’s vocal about the issues of current club culture and runs the project „Transmission“ with researcher Dr. Kerstin Meißner, which aims to make the political relevance and history of international sound, club and rave culture audible and visible. Follow Cate: @cate_hops NASRA As a music collector since as long as she can remember, taking a step into the DJ booth was only natural for Nasra. Berlin-based, and part of Femme Bass Mafia, Nasra has since then proven to be a delicate selector and multifaceted DJ. Heavily inspired by UK influenced sounds, she relentlessly tries new combinations and plays from afro & future bass to trap, breakbeat and jungle, while adding some touches of UKG and 2step along the way - which are close to her heart. Not only is she shaking crowds in Berlin, Vienna or Budapest, she also performed at various stages and stations including Splash! Festival, Rinse FM, Fusion Festival and Keep Hush as well as performances at DeSchool, Razzmatazz Club and Jazz Café London where she played what she knows best: a savant mixture of dancefloor classics, exciting gems and pure bass energy. Watch out for her next appearances which promise to leave an impression. Follow Nasra: @nas.rima ZE:NA ZE:NA love for music comes from her childhood growing up in London to the local sounds of garage, grime, reggae and RnB. Later living in Bristol she immersed herself in the music culture exploring drum and bass, dubstep and house. It was here she gained a passion for DJing which evolved over the next 10 years. You can see these influences in her music selection, blending jungly, breaks and soulful vocals in her mixes. She is also a wellness professional teaching spin, yoga and meditation. Most recently she has been able to explore her love for ambient music with the mixes she is creating for her yoga and meditation classes. On top of this she has been able to use her passion for music to help others through events she curates Rise Nights with the organisation Rise Foundation e.V. which raises funds and provides support for the homeless in Berlin.
