Associated presents Mizz Softee with Pariah, Katie Rex, and Tano

  • Associated and Mizz Softee present... — ⁂ Saturday, April 20th: 10PM - 4AM ⁂ 154 Scott Ave. ⁂ d&b audiotechnik Sound ⁂ Flyer by Kid Kura P R O G R A M → Pariah (Voam, Karenn / UK) → Katie Rex (BOUND) → Tano (In Armatura) Prepare to immerse yourself in a decadent swirl of indulgent treats du jour. My first delicacy is Pariah, an artist who plays a unique blend of techno, house, and ambient music, imported directly from Amsterdam by way of the United Kingdom. Aside from his intriguing solo persona, Pariah also performs as part of the hard-nosed techno duo, Karenn, alongside Blawan. Next, I have Katie Rex, the reigning queen of BOUND, hailing from Philadelphia but no stranger to the New York scene. Rex brings an edgy groove to techno with a fetish-forward aesthetic. Based in San Juan with roots from Long Island is the Italian Stallion, Tano, who will present his bass-driven avant-garde sound. All of this will be served up raw and sexy at 154 Scott with d&b audiotechnik providing the perfect audio accompaniment to these tantalizing treats. (✿◕‿◕✿) ▲ NUTRITIONAL FACTS ▲ ‍*Pariah* is a British music producer and DJ based in Amsterdam. He is the co-founder of the Voam record label alongside Blawan and the two have collaborated extensively for more than a decade, performing and releasing music together as Karenn and Persher. His output reflects a patient pursuit of physical and emotional impact, liberated from genre limitations. Pariah's path emerged from a teenage engagement with punk, hardcore, and metal that collided with dubstep and its offshoots to assume new forms. His earliest productions cut through the vast murk of MySpace and caught the ear of Belgian label R&S, which became home to his debut release in 2010 and several more that offered a recombinant perspective on UK dance music. He continued to release records at a considered, contemplative pace en route to his acclaimed 2018 album on fabric's Houndstooth label, Here From Where We Are. Karenn first formed in 2011, and the project accounts for some of the most instinctual, exciting techno of the 2010s, with improvised live performances setting the standard for the biggest festival stages and in the most intimate sweatboxes. Their 2019 debut album Grapefruit Regret encapsulated the powerhouse, multivalent sound, and coincided with the launch of Voam, which has since become one of dance music's most well-regarded new labels. He continues to put out his own inescapable tracks that feel like classics from the moment they drop – such as "Caterpillar," released in 2022. It preceded the debut of Persher, which featured Pariah as guitarist, bassist, and co-producer (with Blawan) of the searing Man With The Magic Soap, released on Thrill Jockey.. But no matter the alias or avenue, Pariah's music is a memorable swirl of ideas and influences that feels eternally in-progress, waiting for the right collaborators, contexts and crowds to cohere and inspire with rare impact. (★‿★) To New York City’s dance floors, the name *Katie Rex*, is a familiar mainstay. With roots beginning in the Philadelphia rave scene, her passion for the underground has crossed genre boundaries and culminated into an in-depth knowledge of music and cultural trends after dark. Rex’s DJ sets fuse ceiling busting rave anthems into techno, with groove and edge. She's shared the bill with top artists across genres, staying true to her passion for progressive sounds. In the fine art sphere, she’s done activations with David LaChapelle, Tom of Finland, Elizaveta Porodina, Kia Labeija, For Freedoms, Ethan James Green, and more. She holds club residencies in New York City at Basement with BOUND and Le Bain for Midnite Request Line. Rex’s infamous event series turned multifaceted lifestyle platform, BOUND, has received international acclaim with features from VOGUE, The New York Times, Vice, Resident Advisor, and many more. Beginning with the celebration sex work and a need for safer spaces highlighting hedonistic enjoyment, BOUND has reached an audience that transcends any one location. They host events in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, DC, San Francisco, Philadelphia, & Detroit. Beyond the party, BOUND functions as a radio show on The Lot Radio, produces the Fetishwear Catalog (forthcoming Fall 2024), and has released tracks from Dax J, Kontravoid, Terence Fixmer, Jasmine Infiniti, Silent Servant, Bored Lord and more. (★‿★) Tano is a recent figure to emerge from NYC’s storied Italian-American community in the field of club music, following a well-trodden path worn in by Lenny Dee, Danny Tenaglia, Anthony Parasole, and plenty more since the late 80s, when freestyle and early house found roots there. It’s also strongly associated with a certain style from its exponents centered on hard hitting party jams that take dance music history deeply into account. Both in his sets and his productions Tano is emblematic of this approach. Recent releases on SPE : C, Redstone Press and his own In Armatura label showcase his percussive, bass-driven avant-garde take on techno and have perked ears and received considerable recognition, while his DJ sets always provide a mix of upfront styles and keep the party vibe alive. ▲ ETIQUETTE ▲ Mizz Softee is a warm, welcoming space for all gender, racial, ethnic, sexual and age identities.
