  • Psychic Liberation (PL) is a label founded in 2013 that originally ran with Miguel Alvariño under the title Primitive Languages as a cassette and record store project in New York City. Since 2019, Nick Klein has been running it solo out of the EU under the title Psychic Liberation. On May 8th Anne Gillis, HMOT, Diego Behncke and Tinnitustimulus will perform at the monthly concert series of the same name in the Roter Salon – curated by Hugo Esquinca and Nick Klein. Anne Gillis Anne Gillis originally 1984 released album ‘Aha’ was just recently re-relased on the label La Scie Dorée. The cult French pioneer’s album is a lesser-known masterpiece that presses concrète tape experimentations into dizzying kosmische synthwork. Anne Gillis continues to progress and evolve musically, some of her work is contructed around primitive hiss noise and error sounds, some around the cohesiveness of her disquieting singing voice. Read a statement of the artists below. HMOT is the solo music project of Stas Shärifulla, an artist-researcher based in Basel, working with sound and decoloniality. Originating from Eastern Siberia, Russia, with Bashqort heritage, Stas is studying how the variety of sonic and listening practices serve as tools for community-building, preservation of collective memory, political imagination, and action ethnography. As a self-taught quraysı, Stas structures his live performances around the idea of how the musical tradition transforms when approached by someone with a remote, secondhand perspective. His other works, including mixed-media installations, lectures, interventions, etc., usually focus on related themes of identity-based oppression, forced migration, and resource extractivism. Diego Behncke is an artist based in Berlin. His work is realized through the frameworks of synthesis, fictional systems, abstraction, and the limits of comprehension as relational structures. Taking form through obfuscation operations involving different materials, his works appear as an abuse of residual conceptual and technical byproducts, a foregrounding of epistemic faults, and a strategic misdirection of ambiguity. For several years he’s been releasing sound works, running his label Prensa Manual, and participating in diverse exhibitions. Tinnitustimulus is an American Harsh Noise project based in Providence, Rhode Island. Since 2004, he has played hundreds of dynamic performances across the United States. A singular intensity is achieved in each performance, using the friction of found metals, tape loops, and feedback. By Anne Gillis: “My main source of inspiration is the heart of the intimate. Personal secret garden, but also world of sensation common to all, accessible to all. As so many traces of a sound and plastic unconscious, my imagination turns into a microscope In my childhood, I had been captivated by a map of colors for embroidery threads Very early attracted by the « world of sounds » I multiplied the experiments to make us, them and me, enter into a relationship I have constitute my map of waves, my sampling of sounds, by nuances, correspondences, registers, echos, felt sensations, … as so many pompons of sampling of my “secret garden” Over time sounds and I entered deep affinity. I took their essence, bodily, in full hands; I made them rise, twisted them, smoothed, stretched, curled up in a ball, muddled… I impregned me of them. They became my instruments and, among them, my noise-sounds of voice, are most of the time impossible to distinguish as such
