  • CSTC X IKLECTIK presents, Niblock Voices An evening around works featuring voice by Phill Niblock with Anna Clementi (Mezzosprano), Loré Lixenberg (Mezzosprano), Nicholas Isherwood (bass-baritone) and Katherine Liberovskaya (live video) Monday 29th April 2024 | Starts: 7pm LIMITED TICKETS! St. James' Hatcham Church, St James's, London, SE14 6AD Join us at St. James' Hatcham Church in commemorating the life and groundbreaking work of Phill Niblock, the influential New York composer and visual artist whose minimalist creations reshaped the sonic landscape. Niblock, known for his hauntingly beautiful compositions incorporating drones, microtones, and an eclectic array of instruments, passed away in January in Manhattan at the age of 90. In December 2023, at Goldsmiths, we were in close contact with Phill Niblock and Katherine Liberovskaya to aid with the production of their opera, Hammettlogue, based on the writings of hard-boiled American detective novelist, Dashiell Hammett in view of a premier at Ostrava New Opera Days. The plan was to support the project with video production and a first performance of excerpts of the opera as work-in-progress. After news of Phill’s death, Atau Tanaka sent his condolences to Katherine, who expressed her desire to continue with the project. This embodied Phill’s spirit to never stop. A work-in-progress performance of a new opera therefore continues – The show must go on! – and has become very organically, the London memorial concert for Phill with a broad community of collaborators, and with it, the presentation of excerpts of his first posthumous work. Despite having no formal musical training, Niblock rose to prominence as a leading figure in experimental music, founding Experimental Intermedia in the 1970s alongside choreographer Elaine Summers. His loft on Centre Street became a hub for boundary-pushing artists, including luminaries like John Cage and Thurston Moore, who found inspiration in Niblock's immersive performances. Join us for a second evening of reflection and celebration. Performers: Katherine Liberovskaya Katherine Liberovskaya is a Canadian intermedia artist based in NYC. Involved in experimental video since the 80's, she has produced numerous single-channel video art pieces, video installations and video performances, as well as works in other media, that have been shown around the world. Since 2001 her work predominantly focuses on the intersection of moving image with sound/music in various both ephemeral and fixed forms (projections, installations, performances), notably through collaborations with many composers and sound artists in improvised live video+sound concert situations where her live visuals seek to create improvisatory "music" for the eyes. For over 22 years she collaborated with composer/intermedia artist Phill Niblock on various live, video and installation projects. Loré Lixenberg Alongside her interpretive & improvisation voice practice, Lixenberg's vocal compositional practice has three major features. Firstly, exploring voice & language through birsong (‘BIRD ‘ and ‘THE BIRD STUDIES), secondly, drawing on socially engaged practices ( PRET A CHANTER, THE VOICE PARTY) and thirdly, exploring digital technologies and apps for their operatic dramatic potential creating a new form - the APP-ERA. Anna Clementi Anna Clementi is a performer and a voice acrobat. Through her ability to combine language(s), voice, dance and acting, Clementi is considered a significant interpreter of contemporary compositions. Her repertoire embraces experimental, improvised and classical music, sound poetry as well as chanson, cabaret and electronic music. She describes herself as an actress of the voice rather than a pure singer. She is a member of the vocal group 'Voxnova Italia' ,of the ensemble 'European Music Project' (EMP) and of the Duo 'Deviant Divas’ with Laurie Schwartz. Nicholas Isherwood Nicholas Isherwood has sung medieval and renaissance music with Joel Cohen, Bach with Helmuth Rilling, baroque music with William Christie and romantic music with Zubin Mehta. His main focus is 20th and 21st century music. He has worked with most of the important composers of our time and published a book “The Techniques of Singing” for Bärenreiter Verlag. Drawing by Katherine Liberovskaya CSTC, the Centre for Sound Technology & Culture, and IKLECTIK, nonprofit creative organisation supporting experimental sound, art and technology, join forces to create educational events, workshops, lectures and immersive experiences that resonate with audiences and inspire new forms of expression.
