The British Museum & Psy-Sisters present Dance through time to celebrate International Dance Day (29 April).
In the lead up to this joyous celebration of all things dance, the British Museum has teamed up with global arts collective Psy-Sisters for an extraordinary collaboration exploring the history of dance with Dance through Time.
Through a series of live performances, the event will explore traditional dance forms – such as Chinese Fan Dance and Bharatanatyam South Indian classical dance – tracing the rich tapestry of dance back to its ancient origins. Visitors will be immersed in graceful movements and striking choreography that have captivated generations for millennia.
The event will then go on to explore the evolution of dance from forms such as Baroque to modern styles like Contemporary, Hip Hop, and the rise of electronic dance music.
Dance has deep roots that span the centuries and connect multiple cultures across the globe. Visitors are invited to consider the role of dance in culture, music and society and how the art form is evolving and shaping communities all over the world. Each performance will be accompanied with its historical context narrated by the dancers themselves.
