- Community building has never been easier and sometimes, harder, in an eternally online world. It's up to the individual to find their tribe which often exists outside immediate, physical borders. For KCR founder Jahanzeb and artist Hien, the journey to building those worlds has taken them across countries and now to NYC. The conversation between Jahanzeb and Hien will focus on the proliferation of Asian music as it takes on new life over and over again. It will inevitably touch on the actions and reactions that artists have taken throughout history in order to live their truths. As a result, we will hopefully land on an agreed, subjective perspective on validation and who to seek it from. We will aim to do so around the elements of community building and technology. ALIKHAN is a New-York based DJ and will spin 3 hours of vinyl found in New York and during his trip to Karachi. From Naat’s and Qawwali’s, to Punjabi and Bollywood classics. Bryan Hahn is a film director and producer with a background as a music journalist for over a decade for outlets such as Hypebeast, The Fader, Red Bull, and others. He's also an active member of the Asian American Collective and co-founder/executive producer for the creative agency and music label P.S. 4080. Most recently he was a member of the second cohort for the Bandung Residency. Jahanzeb Khawaja is a creative technologist, multimedia artist and founder of Karachi Community Radio (KCR). KCR is an audio visual intervention of sound and space focused mainly on growing the experimental audio/visual scene in South Asia and beyond. This community led project has played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s nightlife scene, transforming spaces into visual entertainment by marrying modern visual aesthetics to the sounds of traditional and contemporary styles of music. Hien is a Budapest-born Vietnamese singer/producer/sound-designer based in Brooklyn, Hien’s work challenges convention. Growing up, Hien learned Hungarian folk songs in school, and also listened to her grandparents—who were cải lương musicians—perform traditional Vietnamese music in Hanoi. Later, she attended Berklee College of Music on a full-tuition scholarship, where she developed her craft while broadening her musical horizons. Today, her sound is both worldly and otherworldly: soulful, silky vocals that stand out among vaporous and ethereal electronic beats in a distinct style of left-field pop. Event is free to attend.
