Garçon
Garçon’s DJ sets are all about the slow burn. He teases music gradually and deliberately, layering hypnotic grooves atop one another and subtly modulating the mood of the night, with this delayed gratification leading to a far greater payoff. Although he pulls from across the electronic music spectrum, Garçon’s interests are primarily in techno, with a particular fondness for rhythmically adventurous sounds from the outer edges of the genre.
Garçon was born and raised in Basel, Switzerland, where he’s still based today. He’s been an important figure in the city’s techno scene for some time. He started DJing in Basel when he was just 14 years old, then quickly started throwing parties, first at the since-shuttered clubbing institution Hinterhof, and later at Elysia. Amenthia Recordings, the label that he co- runs with Agonis, has been a vital showcase for talent from within his creative community and beyond.
Unlike many of his producer peers, Garçon is strictly a DJ. But he approaches his work with a true artist’s discipline. From the moment he started going to nightclubs, he would watch DJs up close and observe their technique, and would learn his records inside out to develop his unique precision mixing style. Still, for all this sense of control, Garçon is also very adaptable, as happy playing to 200 people in Basel’s Lady Bar as he is to big crowds in Berghain or at festivals like The Labyrinth in Japan, Organik in Taiwan, Waking Life in Portugal, or Parallel in Barcelona.
Sybil
Sybil brings to the artform of DJing a skill for storytelling, and a prescient musical intuition, which enables her to know exactly when to shift the energy of a dance floor, and in what direction. At the core of Sybil’s mystical selections is an emotional depth, textural clarity and a sense of space. She is equally adept at playing high-energy propulsive techno, as she is at exploring sumptuous downtempo, euphoric trance, expansive drone, and even full-throttle drum and bass. Sybil’s sets often criss-cross through all of these genres and more, as she guides dancers on journeys which are emotive, thrilling and ultimately revitalising.
Sybil’s DJing has taken her across revered events and venues on the global stage. These include: Waking Life, Paral·lel Festival, Positive Education, De School, Berlin Atonal, Berghain’s Säule, Glastonbury, WHOLE Festival, Dimensions, Nowadays (New York), Brutaż (Warsaw), Harmony (Prague), The Crave festival (The Hague), ZVUK (Kazakhstan) and Honey Soundsystem (San Francisco).
Whilst Sybil’s club sets are often geared for energetic dance floor exhilaration, her numerous mixes are notable for their highly visual narrative arcs. Subtly accelerating and decelerating between disparate BPMs, she stitches together music from a broad palette of textures, contrasting new finds with long forgotten gems to create memorable journeys which are both rewarding and entrancing.
Sybil has released singular mixes for platforms such as Crack Magazine, Patterns of Perception, Dimensions, DISCWOMAN, Ute, INVEINS and Mysteries of the Deep. This is alongside curating her own much-loved ambient, drone and experimental mix series, Deep Mind Music, which she has run since 2017.
