The history of techno in Detroit dates back to the 1980’s. Video footage of Detroit’s early underground scene is difficult to find since this was not a time where everyone carried video recording devices constantly. Only the people who attended the events would have had the opportunity to film it, which was much easier said than done. From VHS to Hi8 camcorders, these bulky pieces of video equipment made it difficult to obtain footage of any of the early Detroit underground scene.
Fortunately, in 1992, an artist by the name of Bill Beaver, aka Billy Love, saw the imminent need to document the historic rise of electronic music in Detroit, and created “Glimpse Magazine Detroit”, a music and fashion culture guide released to the underground community containing exclusive photos and interviews with some of the most prominent underground artists at the time. Along with the magazine, Bill carried his video camera everywhere he went and recorded anything he thought may have been relevant. Now, for the first time in over 30 years, the anniversary issue of “Glimpse” is being released, and with it comes the never before seen footage from the underground in Detroit during this historic period. This interactive piece of techno history contains unique QR codes that, when scanned, will give you access to never-before-released footage of these artists and the scene during it’s growth.
This event is the official launch party of Glimpse: Interactive Remix and will include performances from many of the Detroit legends featured in the magazine and of course some live vocal performances from Billy Love himself. It’s shaping up to be one for the books, so don’t miss your chance to catch a Glimpse of Detroit history, in person!
