First up we brought in the New Year with the epic NYE session with The Chemical Brothers (that’s 4 in a row now!)… then we put on our clown outfits (literally!) and got our faces painted at the ‘Greatest Birthday Party in the World EVER’ in January… and then just when you thought it couldn’t get any bigger, BANG, we go and bring you Modular Gets Together in February and one of the finest line-ups ever assembled at Turnmills Towers. This month Together brings you yet more reasons to be cheerful as we present… Section 63: Music for the Together Generation. The date? Saturday 31st March. The action? Well, let’s take a peek…
Celebration of UK Electronic Culture
Beginning in the main room and the infamous low-ceiling den of acid-house-ness, we welcome the key members from some of the UK’s most groundbreaking and pioneering UK electronic acts of the 90’s – UNKLE, ORBITAL, LEFTFIELD, LIONROCK - who all had a hand in landscaping today’s flourishing dance scene. Never before has clubland witnessed such a line-up all under one-roof, but then again, here at Together HQ we pride ourselves on being different. But let’s not digress. At the top of the stack is the man from UNKLE – the one and only James Lavelle. Together with Richard File (and previously DJ Shadow and Tim Goldsworthy – now DFA), UNKLE have become synonymous with all things electro, rock and hip-hop and have a 4th album on the way later this year (The Future is Unwritten). James is also responsible for cult 90’s label MoWax and can currently be found juggling his time between the new UNKLE material, his new Surrender project (record label, studio and clothing line) and his ever-busy global DJ schedule. We’re very lucky to have him. Next up is Phil Hartnoll – representing techno duo ORBITAL. Together with brother Paul, Orbital set a benchmark for their long and illustrious career with the 1989 rave anthem ‘Chime’. Named after the raves that occurred in the late 80s near the M25 ‘orbital’ motorway, the band went onto become one of the most important electronic acts of all time – setting a blueprint for the likes of The Chemical Brothers to follow. Known for their live shows and trademark head-mounted flashlights, Orbital were one of the few electronic acts invited to play at Woodstock ’94 and followed that up with their truly unforgettable headline appearance at Glastonbury of the same year. Phil is new involved in audio/visual project Long Range (with Nick Smith), but come this momentous night, we dare anyone not to get slightly overcome with excitement if Phil happens to drop ‘Chime’ or other Orbital classics like ‘Belfast’ or ‘Halcyon’ into the mix!! From UNKLE and Orbital then to LEFTFIELD and band member Paul Daley. Leftfield were arguably the greatest electronic act of the 90s and along The Chemical Brothers and Underworld were one of the first electronic musicians to incorporate live guest vocalists into their sets. Fusing house, breakbeat, techno, dub and reggae - Leftfield produced two of the greatest ever dance albums in Leftism (1995) and Rhythm & Stealth (1999), spawning the singles ‘Open Up’, ‘Not Forgotten’, ‘Release the Pressure’ and ‘Phat Planet’ (remember that Guinness advert with the surfers?!) Paul Daley continues to spin all over the world and with previous Together experience under his belt, he should know the drill by now! Completing this spectacular line-up will be Together’s acid-house squadron leader Justin Robertson, who also fits the bill nicely as former member of 90’s big beat group LIONROCK. Together with MC Buzz B and Roger Lyons, Lionrock released two albums through Deconstruction Records featuring the hit singles ‘Fire Up the Shoeshaw’ and ‘Rude Boy Rock’ amongst others. Smoothly done. Completing the line-up is fellow Together resident Anil Chawla – who may not have been part of a cult electronic act in the 90s (he’s only young bless!), but he’s currently forming his own production career with a series of releases penned for the likes of Global Underground and CR2 in the coming months.
Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994:
The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 was an Act of Parliament brought into law by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It introduced a number of changes to the existing law, most notably in the restriction and reduction of existing rights and in greater penalties for certain "anti-social" behaviours. The Bill was introduced by Michael Howard, John Major’s home secretary and attracted widespread opposition. This month’s Together session is of course inspired by the Bill that raised more than the odd eyebrow back in the 90’s, but what the hell is Section 63 for heaven’s sake? Easy it’s… Section 63: A 'rave' is defined as a gathering of 100+ people, at which amplified music ('wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats') is played which is likely to cause serious distress to the local community, in the open air and at night.
The Shrine to Justin Robertson!!
In addition to the excellent electronic talent on offer at this month’s Together, we can’t forget the other star attraction… our ‘Shrine to Justin Robertson’!! Seeing as JR has been rocking the floor since day dot, we thought it was about time that we showed him just how much we loved him! So then in honour of the dude in the hat, Justin will play 3 different sets in 3 different rooms on the night!! First up will be an all too rare 7 inch set upstairs in the ‘silly room’, where JR will get to dust down his treasured reggae goodies. Then he’ll make a dash for John Kennedy’s Midnight Ramble room (T3), where he’ll perform LIVE on stage with his brand new band – ‘Thee Earls’, who are really rather good. Justin sings on all the tracks and sounds just like one David Bowie. Make sure you check him out. Then if that wasn’t enough ‘Justin’ for one night, the great man heads to the main room for set number 3 - his traditional techno, techno, techno work out to close the night’s entertainment. Phew! Justin will also be using this month’s extravaganza to launch his new record label ‘Neverwork’ and for a final giggle, the FANCY DRESS THEME will hilariously be DRESS UP AS JUSTIN ROBERTSON (think hat, beard, glasses, silk scarf etc!) and the best dressed ‘Justin’ or ‘Justine’ will win a selection of goodies including JR’s favourite hat! Justin will of course be the judge too. The actual ‘shrine’ itself will be located upstairs in Topfloor, where amongst other things you find a real life-size Justin Robertson cardboard cut-out to touch and stroke. We’ll also be giving out Free Beards & Glasses, and back by popular demand we again give you Free Jelly & Ice Cream. You luck devils.
Black Rabbit Launch Party / More Live shenanigans…
Meanwhile over in T2 we welcome London scenesters Black Rabbit to the Together family, as they host the first in a series of exclusive parties with us at Turnmills. To kick things off with a bang, Cosmos / Jedi Knight hero Tom Middleton takes to the decks to rinse out the electro-funk, backed up by a super-strong supporting cast that includes production genius Serge Sanitago, plus Black Rabbit residents Bones and Guy Williams (DTPM). Together ressie Mike Oman warms the floor early doors. Then finally over in T3, X-FM’s John Kennedy returns to host another unmissable night of Midnight Ramble-ness as he invites special guests Misty’s Big Adventures along to showcase their uber-quirky live show that features a hilarious frontman dressed/painted all in blue and red with big floppy rubber hands stuck to his person!! Naturally they are signed to Rob Da Bank’s cult Sunday Best label, which suggests that they will be a whole lotta fun! The previously mentioned Thee Earls support, with DJ sets coming from John Kennedy himself, plus man-of-the-moment Kissy Sellout and rising indie/electro stars South Central – who’ve backed up their own sublime releases with remixes for the likes of Klaxons, Shitdisco and Metronomy.
