Avaland presents Simian Mobile Disco & Paula Pedroza

  • Producers/remixers James Ford and James Shaw formed Simian Mobile Disco in 2005, following their departure from the experimental electronic rock band Simian. The two had originally formed Simian with singer Simon Lord and Alex MacNaughton in the late '90s. Not content with their roles in the band and wishing to indulge their longtime interest in electronic dance music, the two latched onto DJ gigs while touring with the band. Eventually, the duo split from Simian and dubbed themselves Simian Mobile Disco . Looking to prevent their own electronic dance tracks from sounding too polished and programmed, SMD exclusively used analog equipment. The result was Attack Decay Sustain Release, which appeared in June 2007 through the Wichita label. Meanwhile, Ford also devoted some time to several production gigs, which saw him helming music for the likes of Mystery Jets, Klaxons , and the Arctic Monkeys. Simian Mobile Disco toured sporadically throughout 2007 and began working on a new album the following year. A remix album, Sample and Hold, was released in 2008 to placate their audience. The proper sophomore album, Temporary Pleasure, appeared in 2009, featuring vocal collaborations with the likes of Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys, the Gossip's Beth Ditto , and Jamie Lidell . The following year, SMD put together the first volume in a series of mix albums for the New York club night Fixed. PAULA PEDROZA Brazil born Paula Pedroza is a truly global house artist. Growing up in Brazil under the watchful eye of her uncle – also a DJ – Pedroza developed an appreciation for house music at an early age. ?As she began DJing professionally Pedroza watched her career and notoriety blossom, leading the Brazil beauty to shuttle between Brazil and New York, playing respected state-side clubs such as Pink Elephant and Sullivan Room. Eventually, Pedroza parlayed the international demand to a move, settling in New York to further her DJing. "I chose New York where some of the worlds best started and where house music was born to fulfill my desire to be a DJ," says Paula. Fulfill that desire is exactly what she did. The combination of Pedroza’s sultry looks with a refined selection of bass-driven tech-house and tribal influenced house led to early residencies in some of New York’s most highly regarded clubs including “BED” and nights "Dirty Disco" and "Moomia" in Soho. From there, she went on to play nearly every nightclub in New York’s upper echelon, including Pacha and Le Souk and eventually branched out to the rest of the east coast and beyond. ?Now back in Brazil pursuing an even further international reach, Pedroza’s DJ resume not only includes her close work with designers such as Valentino and Colcci , but a month-long tour in Tunisia, a plethora of Brazil tours (including her residency for Pacha brasil), and billing alongside industry heavyweights from Sebastian Ingrosso to Tocadisco to Booka Shade . Her building reputation skill-wise and as Pacha darling garnered industry attention and Pedroza was nominated “Best New Talent 2008” by DJ Mag Brazil. And she has just just been named the Best Upcoming DJ in 2009 by Cool Magazine. This internationally recognized award in brazil since the year 2000. Currently, she has completed her first EP, “ANJOS” release on Stripped UK and it's been supported by names like Sasha and John Digweed . Musically, there’s not much Paula can’t do, “I appreciate all forms of house music from deep bass driven progressive to funky groovin’ house. I love it all and there is always a little of everything in my sets, allowing me to play for all types of crowds." Fearless behind the decks and commanding with both her dirty beats and soothing charm, Pedroza is both performer and artist. “I love to play and I love to make people dance, it’s an addicting feeling to move people with music.” LUIS MIOLARO The rise to great success with most top DJs starts with a dedication born out of an obsession for music. For Luis Miolaro , his story was no exception. Originally from Sao Paulo (Brazil), Luis started frequenting local clubs and was smitten with electronic music. "I remember my first time behind the DJ booth, the feeling completely changed my life." From there he went on to buy his first turntables and then a plane ticket to Los Angeles. Luis arrived in L.A. December 2004 to pursue his dream of becoming one of the top DJs in the world. Since 2005, he has been playing the major clubs in the west coast and is currently on the summer 2010 tour as the resident DJ for Made in Brazil. Up next a 2011 Tour including New York, Miami, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Spain and Dubai amongst to others. Stay tuned, his story has only just begun...
