His debut EP is regarded by many as seminal, launching his career along with several early Downwards releases, causing a ripple of excitement through the techno cognoscenti of the time. Surgeon has been prolific since, with three albums on Tresor and numerous Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension EPs. “Over the course of his career, the Birmingham resident has perfected a unique and uncommonly effective production style. His is a tough techno sound with an industrial murk about it but also plenty of funk, swing and a sophisticated sense of dub-space learned in part from his Chain Reaction contemporaries in Berlin. Proving that hard can also be smart, sensuous and danceable, the influence of Surgeon on the 2010-ruling Ostgut/Berghain sound – DJs/producers like Marcel Dettmann, Shed et al – is substantial”. (Fact Magazine) Further evidence of these multi-functional production skills can be seen on Surgeon's impressive remix CV, working with the biggest names in techno (Dave Clarke, Luke Slater/PAS, Green Velvet, Hardfloor, the Black Dog etc), Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Glasgow post-rock outfit Mogwai, old masters Faust and Coil, and most recently, artists such Moderat, Shed, Traversable Wormhole and Scuba. Recently dubbed by Fact magazine as “arguably the finest techno DJ in the world”, Surgeon is also naturally one of the most in-demand, with recent mixes for Warp and Fabric and a schedule spread across Europe, U.S.A and Japan. He has played every key club/event/festival going; helped pioneer Birmingham’s House of God; and, held a 3 year residency at Tresor (Berlin) during its all powerful 1990s peak. Surgeon continues to operate with Ben Sims as Frequency 7, whilst he was also one half of the much loved British Murder Boys (with Regis of Sandwell District). Contemporary Surgeon sets are notable for experimentation with new DJ technologies embracing cutting edge hardware and software solutions, increasingly blurring the line between a DJ set and a live performance. Surgeon is a selector of some skill and one of the most inventive, intuitive users of Ableton out there. Using techno as a vehicle to carry his artistic message, he also mixes up everything from contemporary bass music/dubstep to Rephlex-esque electronica to create a coherent, intense and righteously banging whole. http://www.dj-surgeon.com/ NEIL LANDSTRUMM (LIVE) A stalwart of the UK electronic music scene since 1994, Neil Landstrumm is an artist who always seems to be at the cutting edge. Unaligned to any one genre, upfront and heavy, he makes music for all-comers to the rave. After a lengthy sabbatical in New York, the native Scot is now settled back in Edinburgh where he continues to produce and operate his label music and motion graphics project, Scandinavia. Never one to rest on his laurels and churn out the same old, he has built a career on being unpredictable and open to new perspectives from which to hone his sound. From the initial meeting of minds with the Sativa crew in the early 1990s, Landstrumm went on to create an enviable back catalogue of work on some of the most recognised labels in the industry. Starting with Peacefrog (and the Chicago/DBX influenced ‘Brown By August’ in 1995), he then shifted gears to Berlin’s Tresor Records where he produced several EPs and four full length albums, ranging stylistically from the metallic bass techno of ‘Understanding Disinformation’ (1996) and the bleep & basslines of ‘Bedrooms & Cities’ (1997), to the digital manipulation of ‘Pro Audio’ (1998) and the techno-electro-hip hop mutant soundclash, ‘She Took a Bullet Meant for Me’ (2001). Landstrumm then upped the bass-game onto one of the UK’s most important electronic labels of the moment, Planet Mu. This partnership has seen three critically acclaimed albums in as many years: “Restaurant of Assassins” (2007); “Lord for £39” (2008); and, “Bambaataa Eats His Breakfast” (2009), whereby Landstrumm fused key elements of the UK’s electronic heritage - his passion for the Great Northern Raves and the Sheffield Bass’n’Bleep scene clear to see - with grime, contemporary dubstep and 8-bit. Most recently, he has remixed the globally known DJ Shadow, setting the scene nicely for new material in 2011. Landstrumm’s live show always delivers and has taken him the world over. Originally hardware only and honed during experiments at the infamous Sativa club, his set up these days combines the punch and rawness of hardware with a digital library of beats, clips and trickery to devastating effect, delivering select, manipulated material from the past, present and future – in sum, live electronics at it's very best. http://www.scandinavianyc.com/
