After Art Department rocked the life out of the first X party back in October we’re following up in early December with another on-point line up. Each X party seeks to showcase the talents of respected international players alongside artists from the rich pool of talent that London is currently blessed with. For this next party we’ll be welcoming in Detroit legend DJ Rolando, who’ll be lining up alongside London’s hottest young starlet Maya Jane Coles. There’ll be further sets from Fuse resident Seb Zito and HYBRIDLIFE duo Alex Jones and Ste Roberts at this 12 hour rave in our favourite Shoreditch warehouse. DJ ROLANDO
His 1999 hit ‘Knights of the Jaguar’ is quite simply a techno classic, where a succession of heady climaxes follow a slow build through Latin rhythms, sweeping strings and Detroit synths. It was played by every big DJ around the world from Laurent Garnier to Francois K, a ground breaking production that was a standout piece of work even for Underground Resistance, who Rolando was affiliated to at the time. Since then he has gone on to release for esteemed labels like Rush Hour and Delsin, while in the New Year his legendary sets at Berghain see their fulfilment with a release on the clubs Ostgut label. For X, this vinyl purist brings his renowned turntable proficiency to the party, where he will effortlessly moves through intricate layers of techno and house.
MAYA JANE COLES
There’s been a buzz about Maya for some time now and her recent release “What They Say” on Realtone has added some serious substance to the hype. The track is a royally deep piece of work, with classic house chord progressions, and a solid groove. It was the most charted track on RA in October as well as hitting the number 1 spot in the Beatport Deep House chart. Her dubstep alias ‘Nocturnal Sunshine’ is an apt moniker for the vibe she brings to any set she plays, and she is a worthy contender for DJ Mag’s breakthrough British artist for 2010.
ALEX JONES
Inspired by a mixture of the golden age of tech-house and the disparate, oddball sounds of Koze, Wruhme and Bodycode, Alex Jones is by no means a straightforward DJ. His ability to switch from hypnotic Motor City grooves to awkward, angular curveballs and back seamlessly is captivating. His stewardship of the brilliant Hypercolour and Glass Table imprints has resulted in some of the most interesting output around; Kyle Hall, Jimmy Edgar, Glimpse, Soul Clap – to name just a few. His own productions more than live up to the hype too, with Dinky, Marcus Fix, Akufen & Wolf + Lamb all championing his off-kilter sound.
SEB ZITO
Ever since Seb first discovered underground electronic music in 94, he has evolved right through its many elements. He has forged a strong house and techno sound since establishing himself as a resident at Fuse, however echoes of a more raw sound still permeates his music to devastating effect. A true raver himself, he has a natural affinity with the dance floor which he uses intelligently to build a connection and before taking the crowd deep into his own sound and space. His releases on Off and Monique this year have had a great reaction, with ‘The Wall’ known to be a favourite of Richie Hawtin.
STE ROBERTS
Along with Alex Jones, Ste is one of the brains behind Hypercolour and Glass Table, two of the UK's coolest underground music labels. He started out being the go to man in Leeds for quality sounds at the legendary record outlet, Tribe Records. He regularly supplied locals like Ralph Lawson and Simon Baker, and international guests like Magda, Jon Tejada, and Doc Martin. Early in his DJ career he played alongside the likes of Michael Mayer, The Orb, and LFO. He then went on to run Immigrant Records for a few years before setting up his own labels, and dispensing further musical wisdom as HYBRIDLIFE’s music editor.
