20 Jazz Funk Greats presents Hype Williams: 'Can't Buy A Pill'

  • Ahead of their CTM show, 20JFG presents London/Berlin duo Hype Williams' transcript of a year of voicemails. Entitled 'Can't Buy a Pill', this will take the form of an intimate live/DJ set performed for us one time only. Support comes from 20JFG's very own floundering sci-fi hack - Preston G Parallax. 3 euro guestlist available by emailing [email protected] or writing upon the event wall. http://www.20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk/ http://www.myspace.com/hypheewilliams http://prestongparallax.tumblr.com/ Hype Williams are an ebony cypher leaning subliminally over the underground’s sludgy quagmire, in a league of their own away from the morbid efforts of the drag empire. We have been delving in and out of their most recent Do Roids and Kill Everything 7”, in semi-comatose convalescence as our circadian rhythms recover from the blow of the transitions between their low gravity voodoo habitat and normality. Say, Rescue Dawn III. It sounds like soul butter spread over Chicago’s psycho-geography, dub bridges connecting the space-time shard of chi-house primitivism with a pulsating Rorschach cloud where juke shadows work their feet in the midst of a stroboscopic storm. Worth the shock. Preston G. Parallax is a psuedo-musicologist and science fiction writer recruited by the 20 Jazz Funk Greats music blog. His first 2 novels ‘Verse-Chorus-Metaverse’ and ‘Apocalypse in C Minor’ are highly sought after, yet deeply obscure (just try googling them) underground sci-fi classics. After their commercial failure he was dropped by his publisher and fell even deeper into obscurity, much to the dismay of his fans at 20JFG. Washed up and penniless, he was located and taken in by the warm hearted blog - where his ludicrous and implausible short stories can now be read by millions. Currently living in tax exile in the illustrious city of Berlin, he divides his time between writing his 3rd (as yet untitled) novel, and developing his own home-made varieties of ‘cosmic’ synth funk. 20 Jazz Funk Greats is a UK music blog and fanzine started by Juan and Stuart in AD 2005. Originally meant only as an accompaniment to a Brighton club night, over the years the blog has unwittingly mutated into an ominous behemoth, assimilating writers from all over the world in its wake (currently: Dan, Brian, Scott and sometimes Taraka). Following on from myriad spin-off projects such as the Hungry for Power and Tri Angle labels, collaboration with Altered Zones and its London club night at the Old Blue Last - the eccentric crew now begins a frequent presence at Soju bar in Berlin.
