Hailing from the Motor City and fixing computers in the U.S. Air Force are just two of these crucial factors, perhaps even just as strong elements were the influences of fellow Detroit heavy weights, Juan Atkins and Derrick May.
It was May’s weekly radio show that helped to inspire Larkin to stride down the pathway of music production. Other monumental influences for Larkin include the sounds played at legendary Detroit dance clubs, “The Music Institute” and “The Shelter” which he frequented regularly with good friend, Richie Hawtin. They, along with other Detroit club goers, witnessed the birth of a new genre of music at local clubs; a sound that came to be called ‘Detroit Techno’.
The bumping, sultry, emotive, yet almost romantic style of club music that rose out of urban plight, desperation, and decay.
Larkin’s sound combines house music’s more swinging, rhythmical vibe and soft edge with that of Techno’s muscular backbeat and experimental zeal….and 1990 was the first step towards the future and his own futuristic soundscapes with a pair of 12 inches on Richie Hawtin and John Acquiviva’s label, “PLUS 8?.
However, it wasn’t until 1992, when he founded his own label, “ART OF DANCE”, that he cemented his signature sound.
Under his new, “Dark Comedy” moniker, Larkin created his seminal techno classic, “War of the Worlds” on Derrick May’s Transmat Records before moving on to release material on labels such as WARP and R&S, which were massively influential on British and German, as well as American strains of Techno.
Since those early formative years Larkin has released his sounds on other acclaimed labels including SUBMERGE, PLANET E, PEACEFROG, and RUSH HOUR.
His first full length album, “Azimuth” (released in 1994) was deemed in the top 50 Techno cd’s of all time and his “Keys, Strings and Tambourines” album was awarded placement in the top 20 albums of that year on Resident Advisor.
He’s traveled over 2 million miles around the globe, accumulated over 4 million air miles and he’s DJ’d and played live at the biggest Festivals in Europe, some in front of as many as 25,000 fans, is FINALLY on his way back to Australia……..
AND, if his top ten list of influential artists is anything to go by, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Michael Franks, Kraftwerk, Jean-Luc Ponty, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Shade, and Parliament/Funkadelic….
