Louche: Dial Records Showcase with Efdemin & John Roberts

  • Founded in '99 in Hamburg, Dial Records have been honing their lush take on house and techno for over a decade. Tonight, label stars Efdemin and John Roberts will come to Mint to show us just why after ten years DIal Records remains at the frontline of electronic music. Efdemin, aka Phillip Sollmann, is a Berlin producer who’s careful, calculated grooves have been working dancefloors since his debut release on Dial Records back in 2001. Efdemin's attention to detail as a producer stems from his time spent as a graduate at the Institute for Computer Music in Vienna, where he put together sound installations and worked on contemporary operas. Besides Techno itself, there are many important influences in his music from different sources and other times. From nu jazz to hip hop, a cosmos of music has followed him from the start of his career, influencing his drifting and melancholic approach to producing with every beat. His most recent album 'Chicago' released on Dial last year is a perfect example of these influences, a modern day triumph of genre-spanning deepness. As well as playing the world over, in only the coolest venues and festivals he also used to sing in a band, although you might not know it from his clothes. One of the snappiest dressed men in dance music, Efdemin is rarely spotted not wearing a shirt and tie. A superb DJ, who does not take himself too seriously behind the decks is always a refreshing change, and Efdemin is certainly that, always dancing along as he plays with a grin on his face. John Roberts, the only American on the Dial Records imprint has been making waves since 2008. HIs impeccably curated and delicate debut album 'Glass Eights' released last year won our, and RA's pick for album of the year 2010, and has teed the young American up for an exiting career in dance music. The album, laced with melancholy and punctuated by intricate 808 patterns is a quite simply beautiful, and is as wonderful to listen to at home as it is on a bustling dancefloor. Influences were drawn from 80's Chicago house, yet these rhythmic outlines fade away, turning the music darker and more psychological. It has a a highly personal aesthetic; produced on his headphones at night in bed, it contains samples from not your standard studio gear; eerie live recordings of sounds and shatters, grand pianos and strings creep in and out, giving it a ghostly, other-worldy vibe. Using material from from Glass Eights as well as some newer work, John's Live set for us is going to be a real treat. As well as our guests for tonight, Pantha Du Prince, Lawrence and Isolee have all released on Dial over the years, and the label continues to draw accolades from all angles thanks to their distinct and refined aesthetic.
