Mark Broom’s name has been synonymous with the UK electronic music scene since the early nineties.
Now Norfolk-based, the former east Londoner has notched up numerous production credits on a myriad of renowned labels including Warp, R & S, Mo’ Wax, Soma, Bpitch Control, and in recent years, 20:20 Vision.
It all started in the summer of ’89, after he stumbled across the emerging sounds of Chicago and acid house while on holiday in Tenerife . On returning to the UK he immediately went in search of these exciting new styles; a pair of turntables were soon purchased and his musical journey began.
A regular customer at London ’s Fatcat record store, Mark quickly found himself at the heart of a burgeoning scene and by 1992, Peter ‘Baby’ Ford had enlisted him to DJ at his new club night, 'Nude' after being handed one of his mixtapes.
By the mid-nineties, Broom began turning his hand to production, recording an LP as Repeat for the GPR label alongside Black Dog’s Ed Handley and Andy Turner, a pair he’d known since 1990 haviung DJ'd at their gigs.
The album established Broom as a producer of note, not only cementing his studio relationship with Handley and Turner but also helping launch his solo career, initially recording for GPR, as well as the Ferox and New Electronica.
Working on much of his material at UXB studios, after two years of coming and going from this London hideout, the studios' owner, Dave Hill approached Mark, suggesting they work on some music together. This led to the formation of what became a longstanding partnership, resulting in the founding of Pure Plastic Recordings in 1994; one of a number of labels that Broom’s had involvement with, a list that also includes Rewired, Unexplored Beats, 3 Zone and Ifach, alongside Babyford.
Pure Plastic was to host some his finest work, including the 1996 classic ‘Angie Is A Shoplifter’ LP, a release which confirmed his reputation as a leader on the UK techno scene. Five years on, he earned further critical acclaim thanks to his input on Rue East’s ‘Indoor Culture’ alongside Dave Hill, an album which spawned the popular ‘ Birmingham ’ track.
Mark’s services as a DJ and re-mixer have remained in high demand over the past two decades, earning him dates at some of the world’s best clubs; London’s Fabric, Fuse in Belgium and Barcelona’s Florida 135 to name but a few; while he’s also re-worked tracks by the likes of Steve Rachmad, Ken Ishi, The Advent, Eddie Flashin’ Fowlkes, Ben Sims and more recently Dubfire, Edit Select, Deepgroove, DJ 3000 and Wally Lopez.
In the last twelve months he’s been as busy as ever, working on releases for the Saved, Edit Select and Material labels, collaborating with James Ruskin for Blueprint, as well as producing his first album for fifteen years, ‘Acid House’, not to mention several tracks for his own Beardman imprint.
