Minimal Sydney

  • Somewhere to go after your Friday night out, to let yourself go after the hard working week; something for the discerning listener of quality minimal techno/minimal house. A proper European influenced dark and twisted underground vibe, for those who take their music seriously. Oblique Industries was formed by Melbourne-born musician/composer Ryan Schofield in 2001. Almost hypnotically drawn to the Australian electronic music scene after years performing in rock bands around Melbourne, Ryan still has a strong leaning toward live music. Always an act to watch, Oblique Industries’ combination of organic instruments including percussion, voice and cello with electronic synths, samplers and drum machines, together with an electric onstage energy, sees his performances create a unique fusion of sound and visual style. Not one to be restricted by the boundaries of genre, Oblique Industries distinctive sound draws influence from techno, house, minimal, electro, progressive and experimental sounds as well as dub, jazz, rock and world music. From organic, earthy tones to digital bleeps and squeaks; the upbeat to the downright nasty, Oblique Industries has crafted a sound as much to tantalize the mind as the body, exploring the contrasts between light and dark, loud and soft, BIG and small… whilst delving deep into the spaces in between. Throughout his impressive career, Ryan has performed at some of Australia’s premier music festivals, all the time crossing, blending, and obscuring the boundaries of genre & style. Memorable performances include Rainbow Serpent Festival, Cairns Winter Solstice Festival, Subsonic Music Festival, Tribeadelic Gathering, Maitreya Festival, Earthcore Global Carnival and Earthdance as well as playing his role as Australian percussionist for Kaya Project (Interchill/UK). Oblique Industries is quickly becoming a sought after remix artist after being hand-selected by Richie Hawtin as the winner the Plastikman 'Ask Yourself' Remix Competition out of over 1300 entries from around the world, earning him a place on Plastikman's 'Arkives' on seminal techno label M_nus Records. Oblique Industries music is also available through French label BUS records, Canada's Interchill and Finland's Planetaria Recordings and Austalia's own Subsonic Music, with more tracks slated for release soon on Chameleon Recordings and Open Records. For the past 2 1/2 years, Ryan also hosted a radio program called Sonic Origami, bringing a diverse selection of cutting-edge electronic music to the Melbourne airwaves on radio station PBS FM, the show is currently on hiatus as Ryan buckles down in the studio for an intense upcoming release & performance schedule.
