  • Friday 27th may Get ready y'all... Jelly Jazz is celebrating an incredible 18 years of bringing the best jazz/funk/soul music to the South West of England with a massive party in 2 marquees next to the beach on a sunny Bank Holiday Weekend! In clubland, getting to 5 years is an achievement, so to rack up 18 years and reach adulthood is really something unique! So it's time to celebrate in style with a killer lineup of international artists and local funk freaks, it's going to be a right royal knees up, Happy Birthday Jelly Jazz! - The Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra The Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra formed in late 2007 when members of the Kidkanevil live show and First Word stalwarts Homecut began a series of late night afrobeat sessions at Leeds' Sela Bar. It was out of these jam sessions that The Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra was born, combining their love of afrobeat with their appreciation of the space jazz pioneers of the 70's and the free jazz trailblazers of the 60's, coupled with a hefty nod towards James Brown. Individually they have been lucky enough to perform with the likes of Yarah Bravo, Gilad Atzmon, John Legend, The Roots, Jehst, The New Mastersounds, The Haggis Horns, kidkanevil, Homecut and Ty, to name a few. Their debut single, a blazing cover of Jimi Hendrix classic 'Crosstown Traffic' was released in early 2010 swiftly followed by their eponymous debut album. Since then they've been taking their infectious live show to venues across Europe, winning scores of new fans in the process. http://www.myspace.com/ariyaafrobeat http://www.firstwordrecords.com/ Natural Self Natural Self is a producer DJ and vocalist based in London, UK. His varied but distinct, drum-heavy sound has evolved constantly since his debut release in 2001. He has also worked with such artists as Alice Russell, Andreya Triana, Elodie Rama and DJ Food. He is currently working on his fourth solo album as well as a vocal collaboration with the up and coming producer YULT. The Natural Self sound spans deep, subtle productions and club cuts that blaze. Always staying outside predictable genres these tracks remain vividly effective in many different contexts. Consequently, support has come from many angles with play from the likes of Mr Scruff, DJ Format, Seiji, Ghislain Poirier, Hugo Mendez, Quantic, Nicodemus, Simbad, Jeremy Sole and Kidkanevil among others too numerous to mention. His travels as a DJ have seen him play clubs and festivals across the UK, Europe and North America, from Radio Nova's Les Nuits Zebrees in Paris to Afrofunke in LA. Throughout this time, the demand for Natural Self's services as a remixer was steadily rising, and he re-worked tracks for such artists as Nicole Willis, Quantic, Elizabeth Shepherd and the Canadian MC Abdominal. Natural Self's skills as a DJ also saw him travel increasingly across the UK and Europe, as his style came to incorporate Latin and African music alongside the funk and hip hop that had played such a consistent role all along. Nostalgia 77 Benedic Lamdin aka Nostalgia 77 has produceded 11 LP's/CD's since 2004, some solo, some with the Nostalgia octet and some with other folks altogether. LIVE Stage BACKBEAT SOUNDSYSTEM Cornwalls best loved party boys are headlining the live stage for us, to make sure you make full use of your party shoes !! 8-piece funk reggae outfit Backbeat Sound System are a band laden with groove, their uptempo songcraft drawing from numerous influences in creation of a tight, elated sun-clasped sound. Since forming in the charming Cornish idyll of St Austell, Backbeat have been smashing up stages all across the UK. Backbeat Sound System transcend genre limitations, their music inflicted with hints at genre, yet it never merely takes cues. This is original music, groovy and affecting. Over their two debut EPs, the band have honed a bass-led party sound that is as infectious as it is sonically interesting. On record, they use the full potential of the studio to craft a highly dynamic approach to recording, spacious multi-tracking and arrangements making the best of the format- but live, they are a different beast. The ‘serious pop’ songs’ inherent strengths come to the fore and explode in a haze of onstage energy and pumping rhythm. http://backbeatsoundsystem.com/ http://facebook.com/backbeatsoundsystem SPREE http://www.myspace.com/spreeband https://www.facebook.com/spreeband?sk=wall HANTERHIR Some say Hanterhir are a Cornish "alt-folk rock" group, some people throw "psyche" into the mix just to be cheeky, some may not use "folk" and some would swear by it. Hanterhir aren't overly sure or particularly worried but agree on all. We say they are Cornwall's finest shoe-gazy pie folk punksters. The band play songs in English and Cornish and are written around both real and imagined stories of peoples lives within Cornwall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-lqovmZBfg https://www.facebook.com/hanterhir __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sunday the 29th of May is going to see all the stops pulled out as the SandSifter celebrates its first birthday under new management… Situated on the grounds of the Sandisfter in the dunes of Gwithian Beach there will be 2 stages of music to enjoy along side of a Big bar tent and BBQ …. The main stage will be show casing live Dub , reggae and funk music all night with 2 massive international headliners and 2 of the best reggae bands outta Cornwall ! Stage 2, will be nothing but dance music for those of you that feel the need to dance abit harder! …. Main stage DUB PISTOLS These guys are massive at the moment and it’s easy to see why! From their early singles for Concrete Records to their genre defying 'Six Million Ways to Live' lp, the Dub Pistols have always added a much needed Rock n Roll swagger to the UK's dance scene. Chewing up hip-hop, dub, techno, ska & punk & spitting them out in a renegade futuristic skank they have consistently defied genres & exceeded the highest of expectations. Their genre-mashing abilities have led to remix work for the likes of Moby, Crystal Method, Limp Bizkit, Bono, Korn & Ian Brown, and seen them work with hiphop legend Busta Rhymes on 'One', a track for Blade 2 & 'Molotov' on the Y Tu Mama Tambien soundtrack. In recent years the band has mutated from a studio based duo into a fully fledged live act often featuring the talents of guest vocalists Rodney P, Specials front man Terry Hall, rap wünderkid T.K., Sugardaddy horn-blower Tim Hutton & scratch maestro DJ Stix. last years Glastonbury saw Neville Staple from The Specials join the Pistols live on stage for the encore ‘Gangsters’. http://www.myspace.com/thedubpistols ZION TRAIN Zion Train are Dub/Dance pioneers and have been undisputed leaders in the genre for the past 2 decades. The band were heavily involved in alternative and DIY underground culture in the UK during the 1990s as well as being purveyors of the finest Roots Reggae music throughout this period. They are one of the finst live dub acts on the planet and promoted the practice of dynamic onstage dub mixing which they perform alongside acoustic instruments and the best vocalists Zion Train was founded by Perch (live dub mixing /production), in 1990 and he was later joined by Cod (melodica/production), Tench (production), Molara (voice), Hake (trumpet), and Forkbeard (trombone). Between 2001 and 2005 Dubdadda added extra live vocals and Bigga replaced Forkbeard on trombone in 2001, they were joined by Richard Doswell on tenor sax in 2009. The live line-up has always been very flexible, varying from Perch and a vocalist for sound-system gigs, to an extended lineup for larger events. From the beginning of 2006 Molara decided to concentrate on her solo projects and Zion Train live featured a variety of renowned vocalists but primarily, the band have been fronted by Dubdadda. Zion Train have been one of the planet's most prolific groups, along with a mammoth recorded output and innumerable production credits, remixes and song writing collaborations they have produced magazines, CD-ROMs, Internet sites and built sound systems. Their early releases were on their own Universal Egg label, until in 1995 they signed to China Records. They released the world's first promotional dub music video for the 'Get Ready' single and caused a furore with the publicity campaign for their ‘Homegrown Fantasy’ album. Back on their own Universal Egg label since 1999, they have continued to release quality dub, electronica and world dance music. Their work from the past 20 years still sounds fresh to today's discerning ears. 2007 saw the release of the band’s long awaited album ‘Live as One’, their ninth. It was awarded a coveted Jamaican Reggae Grammy for ‘Best Dub Album’. The album featured vocals from Earl 16, Tippa Irie, Dubdadda, YT, Marlene Johnson, Raiz and Lua. It was incredibly well received and the tour engendered enthusiastic responses in all territories visited. They continued a pace into 2008/09 with shows in regions not previously covered, including Japan, Scandinavia and The Baltic states. There were also hugely successful festival appearances throughout the summer, highlights in the UK included Arcadia Spectacular at Glastonbury and WickerMan festival, also Reggae Geel in Belgium, Rototom Sunsplash in Italy and Reggae Sun Ska in France. 2009 was rounded off with a further tour to promote the release of the ‘Live as One Remixed’ album. Taking in 15 nations to present the next installment, they received rave reviews throughout. The album was remixed with imagination, quality and depth, by like-minded musicians, bringing amazing results. It involved friends and collaborators in regions as diverse as Poland, Crete, Brazil, Mexico, Croatia, France, Italy and of course UK, The band had a storming Summer of festivals in 2010, highlights included; Sunrise & Beat Herder in the UK, Sudoeste in Portugal, Ostrava in Czech Republic and Ostroda Reggae festival in Poland. From the beginning of 2010 Perch was back in the studio writing for the next Zion Train album ‘State of Mind’ due for release September 2011. This was previewed with a single released in the Autumn 2010, entitled 'Rainbow Children', an update of the Aswad classic with Brinsley Forde and Dubdadda on vocals. Also a ‘Best of Zion Train’ release is programmed for the highly respected world music label Nascente, home of recent releases from Skatalites, Manu Dibango, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Zion Train have just completed the 14 date ‘Dub Fiyah tour’ of both US coasts, with Rocker T on vocals. There was much excitement as this was their first trip Stateside for 15 years. Shows in; Oregon, Northern California, San Francisco, LA, Boston, Vermont, Massachusets, Brooklyn and NYC, will be followed by festivals over the summer. http://www.myspace.com/ziontrainindub BACKBEAT SOUNDSYSTEM In the short time Backbeat have been together, they have been smashing up the live music scene in the U.K with their unique brand of funky, sexy, party reggae. An incredible summer came to it’s finale with BackBeat releasing their eagerly awaited debut e.p ‘Funky in the face of fear’, which has received nothing but the most positive reviews, and continues to not only bring back the good time vibes of the summer, but make people who didn’t realise they liked reggae, to sit up and look again! Drawing from their experience of filling dance floors across the land, the boys are back this summer with an even bigger sound, that sees them take their anthemic reggae bangers to a whole new level, and with a new e.p released late 2010, this year is set to be even bigger than the last! This group of talented young men draw upon a diverse range of musical influences, combining various interesting instruments, to create a high-quality unique sound. It is impossible to stop yourself skanking or singing along, when you hear their catchy energetic numbers! http://www.kernowvibration.co.uk/ LUSH STAGE House / Breaks / Techno DYLAN RHYMES . Lot 49 records Marvin Beaver hides behind the Dylan Rhymes name when producing, remixing or arranging electronica music. He managed to get past the flashlights and you’ll find it hard to find a bio on him on the entire web. After leaving school, a chance meeting with a nu-beat-writing co-worker who was selling his equipment to go traveling led to Marvin’s first “studio”. Supplemented with the now legendary Roland TR808 and TR909 drum machines Beaver started, as most people did in dance music in the late eighties, by putting out a few acid house white labels. Before long the talent was noticed by owners of the seminal Wax Factory imprint, Ron Wells and Chris Simmons, who began to release more of his material. Dave Pearce’s Reachin Records also bought into the young producer’s skills, fuelling the fire and enabling Beaver to set up a commercial studio with his mate Justin Drake in the early 1990s. Leaving Peace Division to focus on his own material, Beaver invented the Dylan Rhymes moniker (a reference to Bob Dylan) and set about working on a breakbeat track for Junior Boys Own. The result was 1996s “Naked & Ashamed” which, due to a Smirnoff ad campaign, became one the label’s biggest tracks (no mean feat considering JBO’s pedigree). Since then he has cemented his reputation as one of the leaders of the electro, breakbeat and tech house scenes, through his output on Kingsize Records, Meat Katie’s Whole9Yards and his own Blue Black + Lot 49 imprints. Besides original work, Beaver has also remixed the likes of Asian Dub Foundation, Deep Dish, Infusion, Dave Gahan, Overseer, Unkle and Puretone while he has collaborated with Meat Katie, Christian J, Force Mass Motion (as Silencer) and Anthony Gorry (on his 2004 album, Dead Famous). FREERANGE DJS Well what can I say these guys have been rocking it of late with there tunes topping the beat port charts and landing tune of the month in mix mag .AVE, Olly G & Hi-Fly are 3 Cornish boys who spend their time throwing party’s, partying, Dj’ing & making beats together in the Southwest of the UK under the title of the “Freerange Dj’s”. Although they have only been Dj’ing collectively for the last 4 years they have individually been clocking up club time all over the country for years, holding residences at club nights of all different dance genres right across the board. It was in 2007 where they really started stepping things up together, playing to crowds of 3000+ people at festivals and continually supporting some of the biggest names in Breakbeat, D&B, Hip-Hop and Electro they soon gained a reputation for really energizing the crowds at their events. Wether it be devastating dance floors, outrageous partying or just general “Cornish” misbehavior they have definitely created a wicked party vibe around the name “Freerange”. In 2009 they scooped up the ‘Outstanding Contribution To Breakbeat’ award at the Southwest Drum&Bass/Breakbeat awards at the Eden Project in Cornwall which was a testament to the hard work that they had put into the development of the Breakbeat scene in the Southwest. In 2010 they went back to the awards to win ‘Best SW Dj’s’ & ‘Best SW Producers’. After being signed up to Southwest legends Ben & Lex’s label Ape Music, the boys have gone from strength to strength in all areas of their game. Their debut single on Ape Music ‘Your Mind Your Passion’ received plays in Radio 1's Annie Nightingale show, Jay Cunnings show on Kiss FM and was shortlisted in the ‘Best Single’ and ‘Best Remix’ category’s at the 2010 Breakspoll awards. ‘Your mind your passion’ was quickly followed up by another smash hit ‘Back To The Old Jack’ which topped the charts on every Dj download site worth a look, received top marks and reviews in every Dj magazine worth mentioning and received top Dj support from a number of A list artists. ‘Back To The Old Jack’ held a top 10 place in the Beatport charts for over 3 months. Since then the boys have released a number of top selling original tunes and some cracking remixes to boot with remix packages released on labels such as Bombtraxx, Standard Audio, Bass Reflections and Aux Technology. The Freerange Dj’s also have a number of other aliases to release the back catalogue of 4×4/Chillout tunes in their posession. These aliases includes the hotly tipped future techno/techfunk stars ‘The Occult’. 2010 has been a huge year for the boys in terms of live performances. They have been booked perform at a number of large festivals all over the UK and almost countless club nights. 2010 also saw the Freerange Dj’s step up onto the international Dj circuit, with sets under their belts in Seville (Spain) , Kho Phagan (Thailand) and a signing to American based agency ‘Agency Sounds’. To cement their quality and ever improving Dj presence the Freerange Dj’s have also been taken on buy leading UK based Dj agency Rocstar which promises a bright and stable future for the Freerange brand worldwide. http://freerangedjs.co.uk/ LUSH DJS Lush djs are 2 guys from Cornwall in the UK (Paul Bevan, Ali Macpherson) that formed in 2010 to produce and perform tech house, deep house and techno music that they love so much. The guys have all been doing there own thing for many years before getting together and come from different backgrounds in the scene and all bring different flavours to the melting pot when working in the studio. Paul Bevan a.k.a Dj Jinal first started DJ’ing 15 years ago and landed his first gig at a club in Newquay cornwall called the Lizzie in 1997 playing House music and Techno from there thing’s just took off and has been lucky enough to have played along side some of the biggest names in the scene and held residency in clubs such as the Koola , Barracuda , Cornwall coliseum and the White House to name but a few. Paul also has been running events for the past 10 years around the south west of England and has a number of nights to his name such as Transmission , Lush and futurism and has also been involved in many more. Paul has also been producing on and off for the past 10 years as a hobby and finds his style is very tech house and some times abstracted house . Ali Macpherson has also been Djing for many years and producing minimal techno for the past 6 years . Ali can best be described as a synthesis nerd and lover of all things techno. Ali loves nothing more than playing around with sounds in the studio and spends most of his free time playing around with frequency and oscillation when not building his very own synth !
