Warm with Mark Ernestus, Tikiman & Special Secret Guest

  • On Saturday 6th August we are honoured to be welcoming none other than Mark Ernestus to Plastic People for what will be our final event at the venue before it closes for refurbishment and for 2011. Joining Mark will be Paul St. Hilaire AKA Tikiman, a long time collaborator of Mark's and the vocalist on innumerable timeless releases on Mark & Moritz von Oswald's Rhythm & Sound, Burial Mix & Main Street labels. Mark & Paul will also be joined by a very, very special guest who will remain nameless for now! As one half of Basic Channel, and the founder and proprietor of Berlin's legendary record store and distributor, Hard Wax, Mark Ernestus has cast a long shadow across the past two decades of electronic music. Mark formed the production team and record label Basic Channel with Moritz von Oswald in 1993, and in the following two years the pair produced nine vinyl-only releases under the name. Basic Channel records were, and still are, mysterious, otherworldly transmissions, every one an exercise in expertly executed dub techno. A string of other labels followed, including Chain Reaction, Basic Reply, Main Street, Burial Mix, and Rhythm & Sound, with the latter two displaying a move away from the Detroit sound and towards explorations of vocal-lead dub and reggae, often employing the vocal talents of Tikiman. More recent projects have seen him continue his relationship with Honest Jon's, co-compiling 2010's fantastic Shangaan Electro LP. With Hard Wax still going strong, he remains a staunch defendant of vinyl, a man who understands it's continued relevance in the way people consume music, despite claims to the contrary. As he told The Wire in 2010: "Somebody makes a killer record, [we sell] 150 copies. The next record is total shit and we won’t sell even three copies. There’s a seriousness about…the producers, but also the audience, it either works or it doesn’t". All-in-all, we can't wait to hear what he will be bringing to Plastic People! Mark will be joined on the night by Tikiman, who will be providing live vocals, and a very special secret guest.
