The festival will be happening in Opatje selo in Nova Gorica from 29 till 31 July. There will be also present Ecologists without borders with the project called » ECO CONCEPT«. The main aim of our project is to prepare (waste-free ) event without harming the environment.
It is possible now! The concept bases on the multiple-use of glasses (The visitor pays a deposit for a glass, after use he brings back the glass and gets back money paid on the begining). Our Ecologists, on the other hand, will take care of the brought plastic glasses to be used on other upcoming events. Besides that, Eco festival encourages everyone to become activists against illegal dumps which are widespread also there in Karst region.
The next representative whose key activities will be contributed to the promotion of »ECO CONCEPT« is foundation »Z glavo na zabavo«. The leading concept of fundation is to inform young people to be more responsible in their attitude to the harmful use of alcohol and drugs with active participation on the road. It has been successfuly operating for more than 10 years. Its recognition is reflected through the following messages:
- embodies a healthy and active lifestyles, especially among young people,
- a positive alternative to the active leisure and healthy entertainment, without alcohol, tobacco or drugs,
- this year represents an environmental project to reduce waste at public events.
How can you help?
Send an SMS to 1919 with the keyword »ocistimo« and donate one eur for Slovenian fight against illegal waste dumps. We have to step together to be stronger and more powerful.
Potential donors, who are users of Mobitel, Si.mobil and Tusmobil services can support the campaign quickly and easily. For donations are essential only two steps – enter the relevant keywords and sent as SMS to 1919. The procedure is short and simple and enabled through all mobile models GSM / UMTS. Donation can be considered as income tax relief claimed by the subscribers to the service account. The individual amount of donations is always 1 eur, a higher amount can also be donated through multiple SMS sending with the same keyword.

Why is it so important for people living in Karst?
There are no reliable data about the quantity and the content of illegal dumps in Slovenia. Average number of illegal dumps is ranging from 10,000 to 50,000. The first census of all Slovenian people illegal dumps has been carried out during the campaign »ocistimo Slovenijo v enem dnevu«. It was inventoried over 10,000 landfill dumps and 3,000 new landfill dumps till today. A total number of dumps in the Register is around 13,000. We estimate that this number represents 30 to 40% of all landfills. The total number of illegal dumps in Slovenia is therefore estimated at 30,000 to 40,000.
Illegal dumps pose a threat to the environment and people because waste find there can often contain dangerous substances. They can also penetrate into the groundwater and irreversibly contaminate sources of drinking water. Illegal dumps spoil the appearance of the landscape and thereby reduce the quality of life. Illegal dumps also have direct negative economic effects due to less attractive tourist areas .
The next negative impact shows reduction of property values, that require large amounts of money for rehabilitation –community treasures have to spent several million euros for the remediation of illegal dumps every year.
Among all the reasons people still leave waste at landfills. This is a result of bad management system of environmental services. Besides that, there is poor control in financial sector.
Many waste and garbage can still be find at illegal landfills because of misunderstanding among citizens. These are often not informed about free municipal wastes to leave their waste or may not aware how harmful it is for the environment. The result of mentioned facts leds to high financial costs that have to be paid by the country, state and directly by the people themselves.
Eco Festival is happening at one of the most beautiful and vulnerable parts of Slovenia – in Karst area. Despite all warnings from Ecologists, Karst still has many illegal dumps that are damaging to the fragile and the caves and karst chasms strewn surface. In addition to these earths ‘holes’ which are ideal location for illegal dumps. Karst is characterized by high porosity of the soil, which means that harmful or toxic substances from landfills to groundwater do not have a long way. Pose an immediate threat to groundwater and indirectly,it is a source of drinking water for people, plants and animals. In addition to all, the Karst region has a high fire risk. If the landfill is covered with plastic waste(PVC), it is especially dangerous for the environment, because of its combustion releases toxic gases. In addition it may also cause spontaneous combustion of various substances, materials or fuel, which is often the main waste on most dumps.
According to reasons described above all these areas need to be protected – solution is a systematic, professional approach. Experience from abroad show the efficency of systematic approach as the only realistic and durable solution.
In the area of ??illegal dumps a systematic problem solving starts with inventory of illegal dumps. However, there in Slovenia the majority of illegal dumps are still not recovered yet and we are in the risk what impact they might have to the environment. The first inventory in Slovenia was made last year during the campaign »cleaning Slovenia in one day«. In this project was involved over 270,000 volunteers who had cleaned around 7,000 illegal dumps and about 12,000 tonnes of waste was removed from the nature.
What are our goals?
to include many volunteers in our inventory and to encourage people to become actively involved in the good of their place of living (we simplify the registration of illegal dumps through the website www.ocistimo.si, and also enable the application of landfill sites via mobile phone)
to find as many landfills that are not in the Register yet and to achieve entrance in Register of over 20,000 illegal dumps.
try to find, train and equip at least one interviewer in each municipality, who will check all landfills that are in the registry once a year.
To create the basis for the recovery plan for the whole country and each municipality separately according to their risk to the environment.
Uncover the landfill, which are the most dangerous and warn about them as long as the competent services won’t clean them.
