Elevate Festival

  • Now in its seventh consecutive year since the initiation in 2005, the Elevate Festival will once again open its doors from October 20th to October 26th 2011 and continue on with its unique concept of combining a plethora of diverse musicians and performance artists with political discourse, film screenings and live discussion panels inviting speakers from all over the world. For somebody not familiar with the Elevate Festival or Graz in general, the town itself provides an intimate and relaxed atmosphere which is rarely experienced in most European cities. The 2003 Cultural Capital of Europe has a very subtle, yet accommodating feel to it which attracts curious visitors on a regular basis. Virtually every desired location is at your fingertips, thanks to the very dense infrastructure of the city. Elevate greatly benefits from Graz’s compact arrangement. The main festival venue is located inside the Schlossberg which is essentially a hill situated smack dab in the middle of the city. The Dom Im Berg (which loosely translates to ‘dome inside the hill’) is Elevate’s epicentre in which the majority of the music related programme takes place. Split up into three different venues which can all be reached by an elevator installed inside the hill, you could easily find yourself seeing a psychedelic noise rock band on one floor, or a deep house DJ and an avantgarde pop act on another. ►► Music & Arts Over the years, Elevate has developed a reputation for offering a diverse array of musical genres. This diversity gives the whole festival an aura which is significant for its uniqueness. The common ground that all these different acts share is their fundamentally unconventional approach to music, therefore attracting a largely open-minded audience generally eager to broaden their horizons. Very rarely can one experience such a display of mutual respect between audience and performer which adds to the particularly intimate atmosphere. The artist roster is carefully chosen with the idea of innovation always kept in mind. Each year many musicians, visual artists and producers are mostly happy to share their experience with interested audiences at various workshops during the festival. For the second consecutive year, the festival will focus on destabilising the boundaries between music and literature bringing together musicians and various authors working together in unique select performances. 2011 will also see a deeper co-operation with the webzine Resident Advisor, concentrating on further developing the Elevate Music Talks with the goal of intensifying the connection between the music and the discourse programme. During the entire festival, the caverns of the Schlossberg will be bathed in fluorescent light- visual experiments and installations will highlight the venue’s unique interior. ►► Music programme: ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE (JP), ANSTAM (DE), B. How do we meet the big challenges of our time? The Elevate Festival presents an exciting selection of groundbreaking projects and technological developments as well as alternative modes of production and ways of living. Internationally renowned critical thinkers will debate visions for the 21st century and potential future developments. Five days of panel discussions, lectures, documentary film screenings and workshops will feature various topics, which all tackle the question: What's next in the 21st century and where are we heading?
