Animals Dancing: Anthony 'Shake' Shakir

  • Animals Dancing are proud to preset one of Detroit's unsung heroes Anthony "Shake" Shakir, a name more familiar with his peers than the techno consigliere, until now... Detroit producer Anthony "Shake" Shakir. Shake is known as something of a techno purist and his continuing obscurity is understandable given that he has distanced himself from the European scene that so many of his colleagues have turned to for much support. A bedroom producer since 1981, Anthony “Shake” Shakir had a very important role in helping to shape the early Motor City sound associated with such artists as Juan Atkins/Model 500 and Derrick May. Shake worked with Derrick May and Carl Craig as a producer, writer, and/or engineer on several early tracks on Metroplex, and worked in management and A&R for the label. Stylistically, Shake’s music is closer to second wave of Detroit Techno, including such artists as Mike Banks and Claude Young. Shake’s music revolves around hard, stripped-down tracks that owe equally to techno, electro, hip-hop and funk. Shake's prominence has risen over the years, as a result of his Frictional and Puzzlebox labels, the latter of which he formed in 1996 with fellow Detroit electro & techno producer Keith Tucker (formerly of Aux 88). Releasing a series of records both solo and in combination (usually under the name Da Sampla), Shake and Tucker's Puzzlebox has, along with Underground Resistance and Guidance, become one of the more coveted sources of straight-up, no-bones Detroit techno.
