Smalltown presents Octave One Live, Fritz Kalkbrenner Live and John Roberts Live

  • Smalltown presents - Octave One Live (480 West Records, Detroit) Fritz Kalkbrenner Live (Soul, Berlin) John Roberts Live (Dial, Berlin) Techno comes in many disparate forms, but for most, the affect is still the same: rhythm-induced hypnosis and an escape from the rigmarole of daily life. Octave One, Fritz Kalkbrenner and John Roberts have all travelled vastly different roads in the techno world, but unite for a special tour of Australia in December where they will all be playing live shows and present their own unique take on techno.   Octave One is brothers Lenny and Lawrence Burden, native sons of Detroit. The pair is responsible for the Motor City classic ‘Blackout’, the label 430 West, and seven studio albums between 1994-2009. This year welcomes the release of their retrospective compilation ‘Revisited: Here, There, and Beyond’, where the band’s classics are reworked by some of their favourite producers, including Luke Slater, Sandwell District, Ken Ishii, Alexander Kowalski and more. Lenny and Lawrence’s debut tour of Australia in January was nothing short of breathtaking, with Resident Advisor giving their set at Beck’s Festival Bar 5/5.    Fritz Kalkbrenner made his first impressions on the electronic music community as a vocalist, lending his pipes to productions by the likes of Sasha Funke, Alexander Kowalski, Monika Kruse and most notably his brother Paul Kalkbrenner for ‘Sky and Sand’ that featured on the ‘Berlin Calling’ soundtrack. His first longplayer as a techno artist was no less stunning, with last year’s ‘Here Today Gone tomorrow’ dishing up vocal techno of the highest order, while recruiting the likes of Paul Kalkbrenner, Booka Shade, Sasha Funke, Henrik Schwarz and co. for remixing duties on album singles ‘Kings in Exile’, Right in the Dark’ and ‘Facing the Sun’  John Roberts is rapidly whipping up a deep house storm. Asked by Carsten Jost, Pantha Du Prince and Lawrence to be the first American artist on the influential German Dial Records imprint, he also releases cuts on its sister label Laid, all of which have received major accolades for their distinctive and refined aesthetic. The Berlin-based artist dropped his debut artist album ‘Glass Eights’ on Dial last year, with Resident Advisor giving it 4 ½ stars and declaring it “one of the years most engaging and contemplative full-lengths”. Tornado Wallace The elusive and enigmatic DJ/producer is discreetly taking on the world with his hybrid of house, techno and deep groove with the slinky disco playa responsible for three standout releases in 2010, all supported by contemporaries such as Jimpster, Mr Scruff, The Revenge, Eric Duncan, Horse Meat Disco, Greg Wilson, Matthew Dear, Mark E, Eddie C, DJ T and more. 2011 looks just as bright with his next two releases on The Revenge's Instruments of Rapture and Delusions of Grandeur set to solidify him as the leading figure in Melbourne's resurgence on the world stage. Gigs at Space - Ibiza, Plastic People - London, Watergate - Berlin, Milan, Bucharest to name but a few, remixes for Cut Copy and Mike Callander, plus the coveted Resident Advisor Podcast, Australia is surely in for a treat this summer Friday 16th Dec.
