- After a couple of phenomenal events last month in the Sophbeck basement, firstly with Kez YM and then with KRL & Medlar - it's safe to say we are very excited for more of the same in this our final shindig of 2011!!! We have invited down one of the breakthrough acts of 2011 & City Fly favorite James Johnston all the way from Glasgow to play some of his signature house beats. James is no stranger to City Fly as his track 'Move Forward' was one of the tunes that made City Fly Records 001 such a success. He also remixed Creative Swing Alliances - In Love for our 2nd release. James is also no stranger to DJing @ City Fly either as he played earlier this year at one of our label launch parties in Manchester! James Johnston (NMW / 4 Lux / City Fly) For James, his love of house music began in the early late 80s/early 90s peaking in 93/94 where ever Saturday night involved a visit to the legendary Sub Club in Glasgow. However, house music wasn't enough for the young man so the next 15 years were a blur of techno, drum n bass, experimental electronics, improv, avant karaoke, noiserock and electrorock! It was only in 2009 that James truly rekindled his love for house music and started producing deep house… The first track that came out of this love was ‘She’s Gone’ which featured a sample from the Bill Withers song ‘Aint No Sunshine’. He posted this on Soundcloud and it received such positive feedback that it eventually reached NO.1 in the Soundcloud 'most popular deep house tracks of all time' chart. Things like this don't go unnoticed and the track was signed by the Detroit label Kolour Recordings who released his first vinyl EP titled 'Honesty' on their sister label Undertones. James’ Next EP 'Missed the party' was signed by the musically diverse Dutch label 4lux and his follow up vinyl EP for 4lux, 'Feeling Good In The Dark', sold out within 2 weeks. He then went on to supply tracks for vinyl releases on Berlin label Dikso, Leicester’s City Fly Records and a handful of remixes. In August 2011 James did a split EP with Deep Space Orchestra which was released by Boogie Originals and in Sept/Oct 2011 released two new full EPs on Fine Art Recordings (A New Day Begins EP) and Under The Shade (There Is Always Time To Change EP). Not content with releasing music on other people’s labels he decided to co-found the ‘No Matter What’ label with fellow house producer Alex Agore. No Matter What's smash debut release had house heads from around the globe taking notice and James' track for this release, ‘I Know It's Not Time’, was in the top 10 of the most charted tracks by other DJ’s on Resident Advisor for May 2011. Their second release on the label, Alex Agore – Stay Together EP (which came out in Sept 2011) has already proved a hit, with their distributors selling out all copies even before the release hit the shops! With vinyl EPs and tracks coming out soon on Quintessentials, No Matter What and Much Love, not to mention various remixes, it looks like James’ love affair with house music is stronger than ever! .........................................................................................
