Grandmaster Flash...Up On The Roof

  • Up On The Roof...summer parties on the stunning rooftop terrace at Brixton Clubhouse right in the heart of Brixton. Expect a diverse fusion of everything from soul & disco to house & hip-hop from some of the most influential DJs of the past 30 years. Continuing in May with the pioneering Grandmaster Flash. Sunday May 13th sees the first visit of the legendary Grandmaster Flash to London since his induction into the Grammy Hall Of Fame, as the first hip-hop artist and DJ ever, for his single “The Message”! Immortalised alongside Flash were the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Gloria Gaynor and The Rolling Stones’. Common, Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross and LL Cool J joined Flash for a special live performance of “The Message” at the Grammy Nomination Concert in November. The iconic track established hip-hop as a valuable platform to raise awareness of the poverty, violence and drug problems present in inner-city ghettos. For its impact on the genre, “The Message” made it into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Immortalized by Blondie, feted by the hip-hop cognoscenti, Grandmaster Flash is the man who turned the humble record deck into an instrument as potent as the piano or guitar. He was the first DJ to put out a rap record and in “Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel,” he created an aural template that let the world at large into the secrets of the New York ghettos. If Afrika Bambaataa provided the ingredients and Kool Herc a rough method, more than any other, it was Grandmaster Flash who refined the recipe and turned hip-hop from a boroughs novelty into a worldwide phenomenon. He’s the decknician with magic in his fingers. The DJ who put the hip in hop. Flash is fast. Flash is cool. And then some. Known as one of the founding fathers of hip-hop, Grandmaster Flash was one of rap's earliest technical pioneers; the innovative turntable techniques he experimented with in the 1970s have become synonymous with rap and hip-hop today. His illustrious career spans over 40 years, which has seen him collect countless accolades including Urban Music Awards 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2007 Inductee, BET Hip-Hop Awards 2006, I Am Hip-Hop Icon Award, amongst countless others. Crossing his DJ skills with the lyrical rhymes of the scenes first MCs, 'Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five' was formed in the mid 70's. Their most significant hit was "The Message" (1982), produced by in-house Sugar Hill producer Clifton "Jiggs" Chase. Over the years the group has split and reformed on a number of occasions, but in 2007 were the first hip-hop/rap group inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame. Support comes from Mister Shiver, Kid Fury, Loudat and more
