Shrug & Techno Tuesday Pres; Efdemin

  • Efdemin's Australian Debut Revered German producer Phillip Sollmann, aka Efdemin, will make his Australian debut on Friday March 30, when he will play an extended set in the intimate confines of One22 in a special event presented by Shrug and techno tuesday. Efdemin is firmly entrenched as one of the pre-eminent producers in the house and techno communities, sitting in the echelon of quintessential German producers alongside compatriots Robag Wruhme and DJ Koze, the latter of whom brilliantly remixed Efdemin’s ‘There Will Be Singing’ last year. Announcing his arrival with the success of his self-titled debut in ’07 on the esteemed Hamburg label Dial Records, Efdemin immediately established himself in the club canon with an LP that explored what Resident Advisor described as “that lovely place between dancing and dreaming” in a 4.5/5 review. The following year Efdemin released his first commercial mix, Carry On, Pretend We're Not in the Room, a compilation which captured the effortless sense of panorama that oozes from an Efdemin DJ set by showcasing his wide-ranging taste over fourteen immaculate cuts from the likes of Brothers' Vibe, Surgeon, Minilogue and Photek. As one reviewer effused, "Carry On is educating, entertaining and essential." In 2010 Efdemin released his second LP, Chicago, an intricately constructed concept album that appropriated urban blues through a refined, electronic lens and set Efdemin further apart from his peers, being lauded as one of the best electronic LPs of the year. Chicago's legacy has lived on not only through the nuanced original album material but also through the remixes that it has attracted, with electronic deity such as Deadbeat, Fred P, Portable and DJ Koze all reworking album tracks over the past year. Efdemin has also accumulated an incredibly varied remix catalogue himself with reworks of the likes of Pantha Du Prince, Sascha Funke, Depeche Mode Sebo K and Tiga. In addition to his work as Efdemin, Sollmann has also garnered accolades for his work as Pigon, a moody minimal house collaborative project with Oliver Kargl, AKA Rndm, that's more akin to an electronic jam band outfit, producing music "mostly done live with simple edits." In short, Efdemin's output is open to headphone honchos, but equally at home on the dancefloor, never self-serious or too satisfied with its own intelligence. But it's most apt to throw to the man himself to describe his music. "It´s hard to describe my own style especially because my music covers quite a broad range from deeper techno to melancholic house and more abstract minimal textures. Most of my dance based tracks contain a narrative element and a kind of yearning inside. My music isn´t too much focussed on functionality but on creating a unique mood." Don't miss Efdemin's Australian debut as he plays an extended set from 1am till sunrise at the newly revamped venue One22. Support from: Dave Stuart (Shrug) Chris Honnery (Deep Impressions) This event is strictly limited to 200 tickets to ensure an intimate experience for all in attendance. Tickets are currently available through resident advisor.
